A mother and daughter’s dining experience turned sour when they discovered an unexpected ingredient in their tom yum soup. As they neared the bottom of the pot, they found broken pieces of instant noodles, rice vermicelli, and ramen noodles mixed in with the traditional herbs and spices.
In a social media post that gained significant attention, the customer expressed her shock and disgust. She explained that they had ordered several dishes, including grilled beef Luang Prabang-style, tom yum with seafood, fried shrimp cakes, and Lao sticky rice. While the shrimp cakes and tom yum at a nearby Thai restaurant were more to their taste, they had no complaints about the food itself, as everyone’s preferences are unique.
However, as they were finishing their meal, her daughter’s question about the presence of instant noodle fragments in the tom yum soup startled her. Upon further inspection, they found not only broken instant noodles but also strands of rice vermicelli and ramen noodles. When she called over a staff member and asked if these ingredients were meant to be in the dish, the employee denied it and called over the kitchen supervisor.
The supervisor initially attributed the mistake to accidentally cooking rice noodles in the tom yum broth. However, upon further inspection, the customer found not only rice noodles but also vermicelli, instant noodles, and ramen noodles in the broth. The supervisor then changed their explanation, blaming the mix-up on mistakenly scooping up the wrong ingredients, including mushrooms and noodles. The customer found this explanation unreasonable and insisted that it was impossible to mistake all three types of noodles and vermicelli.
She suspected that the broth might be leftover from a previous customer’s hot pot, a disturbing thought. The staff apologized profusely and offered to waive the bill, but the customer felt that the damage had already been done. She left the restaurant feeling disgusted and worried about the potential health risks, including viruses and bacteria. Despite the staff’s apologies and promises to improve, the customer doubted she would return.
The social media post sparked outrage among users, who criticized the restaurant’s practices and service. While taste preferences may vary, the issue at hand was about the restaurant’s integrity and the disturbing nature of the incident.

A horrifying experience at Restaurant K.
Today, my daughter and I ordered several dishes: Grilled Beef Luang Prabang-style, tom yum with seafood, fried shrimp cakes, and Lao sticky rice. Personally, I preferred the shrimp cakes and tom yum at the Thai restaurant next door, as they were fresher and sweeter, whereas the shrimp cakes here were starchy and lacked shrimp flavor. The tom yum at the Thai place was also more flavorful and robust. However, the sticky rice here was delicious.
Of course, these are just my personal preferences, and everyone’s tastes are different. But… as we were finishing our meal, my daughter asked, “Why are there instant noodle pieces in here?” I was shocked and horrified to see that she was right. There were indeed broken pieces of instant noodles, all short and soggy.
I called over a staff member and asked, “Are these instant noodles supposed to be in this dish?” The staff member replied, “No.” I showed them the noodles in the pot, and they called over the person in charge of the kitchen. Initially, they explained that a kitchen staff member had accidentally cooked rice noodles in the tom yum broth.
Wait, so they used the same tom yum broth to cook rice noodles and then served it to customers? I poured out the broth and found not only rice noodles but also vermicelli, instant noodles, and ramen noodles! The kitchen staff then changed their story, saying that they had accidentally scooped up the wrong ingredients, including mushrooms and noodles, from the same container.
I did not accept this explanation as it was illogical. It is impossible to mistake all three types of noodles and vermicelli. Unless… it was leftover hot pot broth from a previous customer!!! I asked to speak to the restaurant manager, but the staff member who had initially greeted us insisted that she was in charge.
They apologized profusely, promised to learn from this incident, and offered to waive the bill. I told them that it didn’t matter now, as my daughter and I had already eaten most of the dish. What more could they do?
I left the restaurant feeling disgusted and worried about potential health risks. I kept thinking about viruses like herpes, hand, foot, and mouth disease, the common cold, and even the HP (Helicobacter pylori) bacteria. Thankfully, the broth was boiled, so hopefully, any harmful pathogens were killed.
As I was waiting for the elevator, one of the staff members ran up to me and asked for my phone number, saying that they needed to report the incident to their boss and that they hoped I would have a better experience next time. I asked, “Do you think I’ll come back?”
The comments section of the post was filled with angry reactions from netizens, who condemned the restaurant’s practices and service. While taste preferences may differ, this incident was about the restaurant’s integrity and the disturbing nature of the experience.
What was supposed to be a pleasant dining experience for the mother and daughter turned into a disturbing incident that left a bad taste in their mouths, literally and metaphorically. The social media post continues to gain traction, with many users sharing their own similar experiences and expressing their disappointment in the restaurant’s practices.
At the time of writing, the post is still spreading across social media platforms.
