Nhơn Trạch: The Rise of an Industrial Powerhouse in Southern Vietnam
Nhơn Trạch, a district in Đồng Nai Province, recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with a commemorative event. Speaking at the ceremony, Lê Thành Mỹ, Secretary of the Nhơn Trạch Party Committee, reflected on the district’s remarkable transformation over the past three decades.
Once a predominantly agricultural district with 80% of its population dependent on farming, Nhơn Trạch has now emerged as an industrial powerhouse. All its communal-level localities have achieved the advanced new rural criteria, with a significant shift in the economic structure. The agriculture sector now contributes less than 1%, while industry and services account for over 99% of the district’s economy.
The district is home to 10 industrial zones and clusters, attracting nearly 620 projects, including over 440 foreign-invested projects with a total capital of more than USD 11 billion. These projects have created employment opportunities for approximately 130,000 workers.
With a newly approved master plan by the Prime Minister and resolutions of Đồng Nai province, Nhơn Trạch is envisioned to become an industrial-urban-port city in the future. It will serve as a hub for economics, culture, and technology in the Ho Chi Minh City region.
The district has achieved impressive growth rates, with a 15% average increase in gross regional domestic product. The industrial sector dominates with an 82% contribution, followed by the service sector at 17%, while agriculture continues to decline, accounting for only 0.87%.
In 2023, Nhơn Trạch’s population reached 287,540, a 2.8-fold increase compared to when it was established. The per capita income, in new rural criteria, surpassed VND 82 million per year, a more than 50-fold increase compared to 1995.
Notably, Nhơn Trạch is recognized as one of the districts with the highest budget revenue in the country, with an annual budget revenue growth rate of about 20%. In 2023, the district’s budget revenue exceeded VND 13,000 billion, accounting for nearly 20% of Đồng Nai province’s total budget revenue, a staggering 280-fold increase compared to 1995.
In 2016, the Prime Minister recognized Nhơn Trạch as a “new rural district.” Today, all communal-level localities have achieved advanced new rural standards, and the district has met three out of five criteria for a second-tier city.
Secretary of the Party Committee, Lê Thành Mỹ, attributed the district’s success to its advantageous geographical location. Nhơn Trạch is one of the few districts in the country with three sides bordering rivers, and it is strategically located in the Southern Key Economic Region. It is also within the economic triangle of Ho Chi Minh City, Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu, and Đồng Nai, benefiting from vital regional transport links.
With its favorable conditions, Nhơn Trạch has the potential to attract investment and achieve high growth rates. The district is well on its way to becoming the port city of the Southern Key Economic Region in the near future.
Nhơn Trạch: Leading the Way in FDI Attraction
Võ Tấn Đức, Vice Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee of Đồng Nai, shared with the Báo Đồng Nai that Nhơn Trạch has been at the forefront of attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the province and the region.
“Nhơn Trạch is one of the leading destinations for FDI in the province and the region, attracting prominent groups such as Hualon, Chingfa, Urbiz, Tongkook, Thái Phong, Hyosung, and Formosa,” said Mr. Đức.
Currently, the industry-construction sector in Nhơn Trạch accounts for over 81% of the district’s economy, a more than 16-fold increase compared to 1994, and significantly higher than the provincial average.
The district has also witnessed a consistent 25% annual growth rate in trade and services. In terms of tourism, Nhơn Trạch attracts approximately 300,000 visitors annually for leisure and recreation.
At the beginning of 2023, the Provincial Party Committee of Đồng Nai issued a resolution on the development of Nhơn Trạch into an urban area by 2030, with a vision towards 2040. In the short term, the district aims to meet the criteria for a third-tier city by 2025. By 2030, it is expected to become the Nhơn Trạch city and substantially achieve the criteria for a second-tier city.
According to the Nhơn Trạch District Information Portal, the district was re-established under Government Decree No. 51/CP dated June 21, 1994, and officially came into operation on September 1, 1994, with a natural area of 41,089 hectares and a population of 101,882. Nhơn Trạch was separated from Long Thành district, known for the Long Thành International Airport.
Strategically located, Nhơn Trạch has three sides bordering the Đồng Nai, Thị Vải, and Lòng Tàu rivers, with five communes (Long Tân, Đại Phước, Phú Hữu, Phước Khánh, and Vĩnh Thanh) situated along these rivers.
