From February 2024, the Da Nang Department of Construction reported to the city’s People’s Committee on the plan to temporarily build Dragon Park on a 2.8-hectare plot of land in the northwest of the intersection of Vo Van Kiet and Vo Nguyen Giap streets in Son Tra district. This area is planned for the construction of a financial center.
All the dragon mascots and some flower decorations from the 2024 Tet festival will be brought to this location for locals and tourists to enjoy.
While the Dragon Park project remains on paper, the dragon mascots are left exposed to the elements.
Up until now, although the dragon mascots have been gathered in one place, the project has yet to take shape. As observed on-site, the dragon mascots are scattered, and many have been severely damaged due to prolonged exposure to the sun and rain.
In a report to the Da Nang People’s Committee, the Department of Construction stated that they had invited relevant units to listen to the reports of two units participating in the socialization of this project. The department proposed a total project comprising two main subdivisions with a total investment of over VND 14 billion.
The construction of the park was planned to take place from April to June, but it has not been implemented yet.
The Da Nang People’s Committee approved the decoration of the park and its operation and maintenance throughout 2024. However, the socializing units proposed a five-year existence period. In case the city retrieves the land earlier, they requested permission to relocate to a new position.
As the proposal differed from the city’s policy, the Department of Construction requested the city’s leaders to assign the units to organize a meeting for consideration. Up to now, the project has not made any significant progress.
During the 2024 Tet festival, Da Nang city decorated 15 locations with flowers, investing VND 20 billion. Each site featured stylized dragon images with various shapes and poses, ensuring both majesty and cultural appropriateness for the Asian context.
