According to the latest updates from the Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), as of now, EVN’s hydroelectric plants in the northern region are still operating normally, and water inflow to the reservoirs has increased due to the impact of storms.
Some hydroelectric reservoirs are currently releasing water through spillway gates under the direction of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and the provincial/municipal Steering Committees for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control. Specifically, Tuyen Quang (4 gates open), Lai Chau (1 gate open), Ban Chat (4 gates open), Hue Quang (4 gates open), Hoa Binh (2 gates open), Thac Ba (2 gates open), Trung Son (6 gates open), and Ban Ve (6 gates open).
Regarding the 500kV high-voltage grid, 7 out of 9 affected line sections have been restored; for the 220kV grid, 27 out of 40 affected line sections have been repaired; and for the 110kV grid, 77 out of 102 affected line sections have been fixed.
For the medium and low-voltage grids, strong winds from the storm caused widespread interruptions in power supply as many distribution lines and substations in various northern provinces and cities experienced faults.
According to preliminary information from the Northern Power Corporation, out of over 5.7 million customers impacted by Storm Yagi, power supply has been restored to approximately 4.2 million customers as of the morning of September 9, achieving a restoration rate of 73.7% for affected customers.
In addition to the deployment of about 4,000 officers and employees for post-storm power restoration, the Northern Power Corporation also mobilized a total of 38 emergency teams, consisting of 413 officers and technicians from 13 units, on September 8, 2024, to support the repair of the severely affected power grid in Quang Ninh province and Hai Phong city due to Storm No. 3.
In Hanoi, according to the Hanoi Power Corporation, approximately 290,000 customers were affected by Storm Yagi, mostly in the outlying districts. As of now, almost all of the customers who experienced power interruptions due to the storm have had their electricity supply restored.
The Lights of Hai Phong: Restoring Power to the City
The Hai Phong Power Company has mobilized over 1,000 of its best and brightest engineers and technicians from across the city’s district power companies and high-voltage electrical testing units. With a comprehensive fault-zone inspection strategy, they successfully restored power to 100% of their customers.
“A Surge in Power Production: Coal-Fired Plants Lead the Way”
In the first seven months of 2024, the total electricity production across the system reached 179.44 billion kWh, reflecting an impressive 11.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This growth is attributed to a diverse energy mix, with coal-fired power contributing 96.4 billion kWh (53.7%), hydropower accounting for 40.9 billion kWh (22.8%), and renewable energy sources shining at 24.02 billion kWh (13.4%).
