Seamless Supply Chain from South to North

To ensure a steady supply of goods and essential items for the people affected by Storm Yagi, supermarkets swiftly took action. They arranged for fresh produce and food supplies to be transported from the southern regions to the northern provinces, ensuring that communities had access to the resources they needed during this challenging time.

Supermarket systems such as Saigon Co.op, WinMart, MM Mega Market Vietnam, and Aeon Vietnam are ramping up their efforts to deliver essential goods and fresh produce from southern regions like Lam Dong, Cu Chi, and Dalat to the northern provinces.

According to MM Mega Market Vietnam, they are increasing staff in their northern warehouses to stabilize supply and transportation, ensuring a consistent supply of fresh bakery items for customers who wish to stock up or consume immediately without further preparation.

Demand for bakery items, especially freshly baked bread, has increased.

While the movement of goods from the south to the north and from the northern warehouses to Mega Market customers has been maintained and increased threefold, there may be delays due to the impact of flooding and rain in the North Central region.

Mega Market is ready to join hands with rescue and relief organizations or volunteer groups that require large quantities of goods for relief efforts, offering the best possible discounts for each order.

In the northern region, Mega Market has centers in Thang Long, Ha Dong, Hong Bang (Hai Phong), and Ha Long. These supermarkets have a stable supply of goods, including vegetables, fruits, noodles, bread, and more.

Over the past few days, MM has recorded a more than 50% increase, peaking at 80%, in sales of dry goods such as cooking oil, flour, instant noodles, canned food, and other dry goods at their centers in the northern region. Sales of batteries, flashlights, alcohol stoves, and solid fuel have also increased, and this trend is expected to continue in the coming days. The demand for bakery items, especially freshly baked bread, has risen. The prices of these essential items have remained stable for now.

Ms. Tran Kim Nga, Director of External Relations of MM Mega Market Vietnam, stated that they closely monitor which items are in high demand. For example, in the last two days, there has been a surge in demand for batteries, flashlights, alcohol, stoves, cleaning supplies, sanitary pads, diapers, and bottled water. And unexpectedly, bread.

Due to the severe impact of the floods in the north, MM Mega Market has increased the number of trips to transport vegetables and fruits from Binh Duong and Lam Dong to Hanoi to two trips per day (equivalent to 16 tons of produce). Additionally, on September 11, 2024, MM Mega Market sent its first relief convoy, carrying 1,000 boxes of instant noodles and 300 boxes of mineral water from Thang Long (Hanoi) to Lang Son.

A representative from Co.opmart shared that, despite temporary transportation challenges, their system has flexibly increased the supply of frozen pork and imported frozen chicken. Fresh vegetables are being transported from Phu Tho and Dalat (Lam Dong) to their supermarkets. The supermarkets continue to offer promotions and discounts of 30%-50% to support customers.

At WinMart supermarkets and WinMart+/WiN stores, they have prepared well to meet customer needs. For instance, regarding leafy vegetables, the supermarket quickly coordinated with WinEco farms and suppliers from Lam Dong and the southern provinces to deliver produce to supermarkets and stores in Hanoi and other areas affected by the storm.

According to Mr. Ha Long Thanh, Director of WinEco’s Production Operations, from September 8-9, 2024, nearly 100 tons of vegetables were transported daily from the south and Lam Dong to the north. This effort by WinEco ensures a stable supply of vegetables for the people and compensates for the shortage caused by the damage to the northern farms after Storm Yagi.

“Especially, the prices of these agricultural products sold in the system have not increased,” affirmed Mr. Thanh.

According to Aeon Vietnam’s representative, in the short term, Storm No. 3 may have a localized impact on suppliers, especially those of fresh produce. Specifically, heavy rains can cause damage to vegetable and fruit crops, and rough seas can make offshore fishing challenging. However, these are only short-term difficulties.

“The unit proactively works with suppliers to ensure a sufficient supply during and after the storm and always has backup sources in case of emergencies,” said the representative from Aeon Vietnam.
