On September 9, An Giang Province organized a ceremony to announce the Prime Minister’s decision to recognize Thoai Son district as having achieved the advanced new rural standard and to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the re-establishment of Thoai Son district (August 23, 1979 – August 23, 2024).

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Duong Ngoc Lam, Chairman of Thoai Son People’s Committee, expressed his pride in being one of the first districts in the Mekong Delta to be recognized as an advanced new rural area.

“This achievement is thanks to the unity, dedication, and aspiration of Thoai Son’s officials, who consistently ignite creativity, harness internal resources, and effectively seek external support,” affirmed the Chairman of the Thoai Son People’s Committee.

The Chairman also emphasized the contributions of over 4,708 officials, party members, and 163,000 locals, as well as the support of Thoai Son natives living and working abroad, in achieving this milestone.

Additionally, Thoai Son has consistently benefited from the contributions of businesses and donors within and outside the district over the years.

At the announcement ceremony, Mr. Le Van Phuoc, Vice Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People’s Committee, shared that Thoai Son District started the National Target Program for New Rural Development in 2010 with a low baseline, where the average number of criteria met by the communes was 5 out of 19. The district faced numerous challenges, including underdeveloped economic and social infrastructure and a low average income in rural areas, which stood at approximately VND 15.5 million per person per year.

Today, Thoai Son District boasts significant transformations and remarkable progress, with 100% of its communes (14/14) achieving the advanced new rural standard, 2 communes meeting the model new rural standard, and all 3 towns attaining the urban civilization standard.

Currently, the average income in rural areas of the district has reached VND 73.5 million per person per year, and the average production value per hectare of agricultural land is VND 215 million. The poverty rate has been decreasing annually and now stands at 1.32%.

During the ceremony, the Vietnam Records Organization also presented a certificate recognizing Thoai Son District for having the “Most Socialized Funds Mobilized for Social Security Purposes.” As of now, Thoai Son District has 31 charitable funds, including 23 educational promotion funds and 8 social security funds, with a total mobilized amount of over VND 30 billion.
