The severe impact of Typhoon No. 3 (Yagi) has affected many ports. Hai Phong City reported significant damage, the extent of which cannot yet be fully assessed or quantified. Dramatic images of two collapsed gantry cranes at Mipec Port in Hai An District, Hai Phong, have been circulating and attracting attention.
However, as of the morning of September 9, several ports in the affected areas have issued official updates and announced their resumption of operations.
Nam Dinh Vu Port JSC informed that Nam Hai Dinh Vu Port did not suffer any damage or personnel incidents. All containers in the yard were secured, and refrigerated containers remained operational throughout the typhoon prevention process. Critical equipment and systems, such as STS, RTG, Gate, and IT infrastructure, were largely unaffected.
Nevertheless, some containers in the yard sustained damage, and Nam Dinh Vu Port proceeded to assess the impacted containers, categorize the damage, and initiate repairs on September 8. The company is expediting the evaluation of the current situation and technical inspections, and they are prepared to resume operations from 6:00 am on September 9.
Nam Dinh Vu Port JSC is a subsidiary of Gemadept Joint Stock Company (stock code GMD), which directly owns 60% of its capital. Nam Dinh Vu Port is one of GMD’s key port projects, boasting not only the largest scale but also the capacity to accommodate the biggest vessels in the Dinh Vu area.
According to data released by GMD, the Nam Dinh Vu port complex is located in the Nam Dinh Vu Industrial Park, a vital hub for international and domestic cargo transportation in the North. It sits at the mouth of the Bach Dang River, benefiting from deep water and a spacious turning basin. The port complex is on the same transportation axis as the Gemadept port cluster in Hai Phong. Nam Dinh Vu can accommodate vessels up to 48,000 DWT, with a capacity of 2 million Teus/year. It offers a yard area of 65 hectares, warehouse space of 10,000 square meters, a main berth length of 1,500 meters, and 1,200 electrical outlets.

Another company, Hai Phong Port JSC (stock code PHP), also announced that it would resume cargo handling procedures and operations from 6:00 am on September 9. Hai Phong Port is a subsidiary of Vietnam Maritime Corporation – JSC (stock code MVN), which directly owns over 92% of its capital.
Hai Phong Port is a national-level comprehensive port cluster, the second-largest in Vietnam after Saigon Port and the biggest in the North. It serves as an international gateway for Vietnam, located in Hong Bang, Ngo Quyen, and Hai An districts. The Lach Huyen cluster, currently under development, will further elevate the stature of Hai Phong’s port system.
Presently, Hai Phong Port handles a significant volume of cargo in Northern Vietnam. It boasts modern warehouses, berths, cargo handling equipment, and an advanced IT system.
