Request to Halt Operations on Vulnerable Bridges Amid High Water Levels

The collapse of the Phong Chau Bridge in Phu Tho has prompted the Vietnam Road Administration to take immediate action. They have mandated a temporary cessation of traffic on bridges deemed unsafe due to natural disasters, high water levels, strong currents, or structural weakness. This proactive measure ensures the safety of commuters and highlights the administration's commitment to maintaining a robust and secure transportation network across Vietnam.

The Vietnam Road Administration has issued an urgent dispatch to Road Management Zones I and II, the Departments of Transport in northern provinces and those from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri province, the Vietnam Expressway Corporation, and BOT enterprises.

In addition to requesting units to continue repairing damage caused by floods after Storm No. 3, the Vietnam Road Administration instructed relevant units to urgently repair Phong Chau Bridge on National Highway 32C (Phu Tho province) and other affected national highways and expressways.

The Vietnam Road Administration requested that units coordinate with local authorities, police, and rescue forces to proactively assess road infrastructure conditions and devise traffic diversion plans for unsafe routes.

Phong Chau Bridge collapsed on September 9.

Especially, the Vietnam Road Administration ordered the temporary cessation of operation of unsafe bridges due to natural disasters, high water levels, strong currents, and weak structures. Localities were instructed to halt operations at submerged sections, flooded fords with strong currents, road sections with landslides or collapses, ferry terminals, pontoon bridges, and river levels exceeding regulations.

For damaged roads, if diversion of traffic to alternative routes is necessary, appropriate traffic organization measures must be implemented, including traffic restrictions to prevent congestion and the addition of road signs and other safety measures.

The Vietnam Road Administration also instructed units to pay attention to sections with signs of landslides, potential rockfalls, and soil subsidence, as well as areas where landslides have partially blocked the road but have not yet been cleared. Units are required to inspect and assess traffic safety facilities and road signs for timely repair, replacement, and supplementation.

Several localities have already prohibited or restricted vehicle traffic on bridges deemed unsafe. Hanoi has restricted traffic on Chuong Duong Bridge, Phu Tho has closed Trung Ha Bridge, Thai Nguyen has closed Cau Bo Bridge, and Bac Giang has closed the iron bridge over Thuong River.
