On the morning of September 9, at the Presidential Palace, General Secretary and President To Lam and his spouse hosted an official welcoming ceremony for the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, and his spouse, on their state visit to Vietnam.

The welcoming ceremony was attended by Le Hoai Trung, Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations; Bui Thanh Son, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs; Le Khanh Hai, Head of the Presidential Office; Nguyen Hong Dien, Minister of Industry and Trade; Le Minh Hoan, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development; Nguyen Manh Hung, Minister of Information and Communications; Do Duc Duy, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment; Senior Lieutenant General Vu Hai San, Deputy Minister of National Defense; Ambassador of Vietnam to Mozambique Pham Hoang Kim; and Assistant to the General Secretary and President To An XO.

A large number of Hanoi school children waved the flags of the two countries to greet President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, his spouse, and the high-ranking delegation from Mozambique.

This is President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi’s first visit to Vietnam since he took office in 2015. The visit strengthens mutual understanding between the leaders and promotes substantive and in-depth development in bilateral relations.

The motorcade escorting President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi and his spouse arrived at the Presidential Palace, where they were warmly welcomed by General Secretary and President To Lam and his spouse.

To the sound of welcoming music, General Secretary and President To Lam invited the President of Mozambique to join him on the reviewing stand. After listening to the national anthems of both countries, the two leaders stepped off the stand, greeted the military flag, and inspected the honor guard of the Vietnam People’s Army. They then introduced the high-ranking delegations of the two countries attending the welcoming ceremony.

Vietnam and Mozambique have a long-standing traditional friendship. The two countries established relations on June 25, 1975, the same day that Mozambique declared its independence. Historically, the two countries supported each other in their struggles for national independence, and the images of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, and the Ho Chi Minh Campaign are deeply imprinted in the sentiments of the generations of leaders and people of Mozambique. In Maputo, Mozambique, there is a Ho Chi Minh Avenue, named by Samora Moisos Machel, the first president of independent Mozambique, in 1977 to honor President Ho Chi Minh and demonstrate solidarity with the Vietnamese people.

Over the years, the traditional political and diplomatic friendship has flourished, as evidenced by numerous high-level visits and exchanges between delegations of various levels from both sides. The two countries have signed numerous agreements and cooperation pacts in areas such as politics, economics, trade, investment, agriculture, fisheries, science and technology, telecommunications, healthcare, education and training, culture, security and defense, finance, and banking, as well as provincial cooperation. These agreements have facilitated expanded cooperation between ministries and sectors.

The traditional friendship between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) serves as a solid political foundation for promoting relations between the two countries in various fields. The relationship between the legislative bodies of the two countries has also been consistently strengthened and developed positively, making an important contribution to the enhancement of the traditional friendship between the two countries. The two sides actively coordinate and support each other in multilateral forums.

Economic, trade, and investment cooperation is a highlight of the bilateral relationship. Mozambique is a market with great potential, endowed with abundant natural resources, including land, sea, minerals, and the potential for developing various crops such as cashew nuts, cotton, soybeans, and sugarcane. Vietnam and Mozambique signed a Trade Agreement on November 14, 2013, with the aim of establishing mutually supportive and complementary relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries. The agreement also reflects the determination to consolidate, strengthen, and diversify bilateral trade.

In 2020, bilateral trade reached 157.18 million USD; in 2021, it reached 150 million USD; in 2022, it exceeded 177 million USD; and in 2023, it reached 546.4 million USD. Vietnam’s main exports include rice, fertilizer, and diverse commodities, while its primary imports from Mozambique are various types of coal and cashew nuts.

Building on the foundation of good relations, Vietnam and Mozambique are continuing to strengthen and develop their traditional friendship to new heights, towards the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2025. The state visit to Vietnam by the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, and his spouse, reaffirms the traditional friendship between the two countries, which has always been cherished and nurtured by the leaders and peoples of both nations.

Following the welcoming ceremony, General Secretary and President To Lam and President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi held a brief meeting, followed by a summit between the high-ranking delegations of the two countries. During the summit, they evaluated the results of cooperation between the two countries in recent times and proposed future cooperation orientations. The two leaders also witnessed the signing of several cooperation agreements.
