Huawei recently unveiled the world’s first tri-folding smartphone, the Huawei Mate XT, in China. The event was held just over 12 hours after Apple’s official announcement of the iPhone 16.
The Huawei Mate XT features two hinges and a flexible display. When fully extended, the display measures 10.2 inches and boasts an OLED panel with a 3K resolution and a 16:11 aspect ratio. This size is significantly larger than other foldable phones, which typically offer around 8 inches of screen real estate.
Users have the option to utilize one, two, or all three screens simultaneously, allowing for a customizable experience depending on their needs. When using a single screen, you’ll have a 6.4-inch display with a resolution of 2232 x 1008. Opting for a dual-screen setup gives you a 7.9-inch canvas with a resolution of 2048 x 2232. The full extent of the Huawei Mate XT’s flexibility is revealed when all three screens unite to form a seamless 10.2-inch LTPO OLED display with a resolution of 2232 x 3184.
The Huawei Mate XT sports a metal frame and a faux leather back. Each section of the display has a faux leather rear, so essentially, the entire back of the phone is covered in this material. It comes in two color options: Red and Black, both with gold trim.
Notably, the Huawei Mate XT dethroned the Honor Magic V3 as the thinnest foldable phone ever created. When fully opened, the Mate XT boasts an impressive thickness of just 3.6mm, significantly thinner than the Magic V3’s 4.35mm profile. Weighing in at 298g, it’s not overly heavy considering its dual-hinge design and 10.2-inch display. However, it’s fair to say that lightweight construction isn’t the Mate XT’s forte.
Under the hood, the Mate XT packs 16GB of RAM and offers storage options of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. Huawei hasn’t disclosed the chipset used, but it’s likely to be the Kirin 9010, previously seen in the high-end Pura 70 smartphone line.
The device is powered by a 5,600mAh battery, employing silicon-carbon technology. It supports 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, along with 7.5W reverse wireless charging.
In the camera department, the Huawei Mate XT boasts a triple camera setup. The primary camera is a 50MP shooter with an adjustable aperture ranging from f/1.4 to f/4.0. Accompanying it is a 12MP ultra-wide camera (f/2.2 aperture) and a 12MP zoom camera (f/3.4 aperture, OIS, 5.5x optical zoom). On the front lies an 8MP selfie camera (f/2.2 aperture).
In China, the Huawei Mate XT is priced at 19,999 CNY (approximately $2,800) for the 16GB + 256GB variant, 21,999 CNY (around $3,080) for the 16GB + 512GB model, and 23,999 CNY (approximately $3,360) for the top-tier 16GB + 1TB version. Huawei has not yet announced plans to release this device in international markets.
