Viettel launched its mobile network in Mozambique under the brand name Movitel (a joint venture between Viettel and SPI, with Viettel holding 70% of the shares) in May 2012 with a total investment of over $600 million.

As of early 2024, Movitel is the leading telecommunications and information technology service provider in Mozambique and is among the top three companies contributing the most to the country’s budget.

Viettel’s Movitel Leads Mozambique’s Telecom Market.

In early 2024, the Mozambican government awarded Movitel a certificate of merit, recognizing it as one of the top foreign companies in terms of tax contributions, with a cumulative tax payment of over $327 million to date.

According to the internal news site Viettel Family , in May 2024, Viettel achieved the number one position in its seventh market, with Movitel in Mozambique surpassing the second-place network, Vodacom, by 11.7 million subscribers. Not only did Movitel take the lead in terms of subscribers, but it also ranked first in mobile service revenue.

Movitel’s revenue has grown by 20% over the past five years.

Over the past five years, Movitel’s service revenue has grown by more than 20%. In the first four months of 2024, Movitel achieved a remarkable 26.7% growth compared to the same period in 2023 . Additionally, its e-Mola e-wallet service witnessed a staggering 230% growth in revenue, accumulating nearly six million subscribers and achieving an 81% e-wallet subscription rate among all mobile subscribers.

Mozambique is one of the most challenging markets to penetrate. However, with strategic shifts in the group’s orientation since 2019, leveraging 4G as a competitive advantage, Movitel has claimed the top spot after 12 years of operation.

Movitel: Viettel’s African Star

To maintain its leading position, Movitel will continue to seize opportunities to develop its 4G network and services and seek growth strategies for its e-wallet business.

Mozambique was Viettel’s first market in Africa. Movitel has become the group’s African star, playing a crucial role in its overseas investment strategy.

In 2022, Movitel’s service revenue reached $407 million, surpassing its target by 106.3% and representing a ~29% increase compared to 2021. This growth rate is seven times higher than the average growth rate of the global telecommunications industry. The cash flow remitted to Vietnam reached $71.5 million, 179% of the plan , the highest ever.

Movitel is known for its high-quality, affordable, and wide-reaching network. This has made it the only network in 2022 to gain mobile market share (increasing from 45% to 46.1%), while its competitors experienced declines.

Alongside network expansion, Movitel prioritized network upgrades and consolidation to ensure stable operations, retain customers, and prepare for new services. Proactivity and determination are the guiding principles for Movitel’s technical team. Every technical staff member treats the network infrastructure as their own asset, taking initiative in periodic maintenance and adhering to disciplined operational practices.

Instead of waiting for the network infrastructure to deteriorate, Movitel proactively implemented robust, sustainable, and modern network solutions, such as repairing and reactivating the national DWDM 1B route in 2019 and the DWDM 1C route in 2020, six years after their initial deployment. In 2022, they successfully upgraded the DWDM 1A/2A routes to 100Gbps to support 4G development.

Since 2020, the company has added 600km of underground cable to route 1B, enhancing the redundancy of the Mozambican national backbone network from 1+2 to 1+3 for six critical segments prone to storms and natural disasters.

Thanks to its proactive network consolidation, Movitel has been able to quickly restore services after facing the impact of two to three storms each year since 2019. This has earned the trust of the government and the people of Mozambique, who rely on the network for communication during natural disasters and epidemics.

With a robust and stable infrastructure in place, Movitel believed that it needed to offer truly differentiated products in the market. In 2019, the industry giant Vodacom held the top spot in mobile services in Mozambique, with a 47.7% market share. To compete effectively, Movitel knew it had to offer something unique.

Movitel’s leadership approach at the time was to tailor its offerings to individual customer segments , developing flexible policies and innovative tariff packages for each group. For every customer segment, Movitel introduced new tariff plans with more attractive rates than its competitors (10-15% cheaper).

Movitel has set ambitious goals for the next five years, including: achieving the top position in revenue-generating subscribers, with a focus on 4G data subscribers; building a digital financial ecosystem, including e-wallets, and diversifying products for money transfer, withdrawal, payment, insurance, healthcare, lending, and savings; and pioneering digital entertainment applications with a comprehensive ecosystem encompassing movies, music, games, social media, news, dating services, self-care features, payments, and lotteries.
