Vietnam’s seafood exports in July and the first seven months of 2024 showed positive growth compared to the same period in 2023, including shrimp, tra fish, basa, tuna, powder, crab, shrimp, octopus, processed fish, clams, mussels, and tilapia…

Notably, the country’s caviar exports in recent months have seen a surprising surge.

Specifically, in July, Vietnamese enterprises exported about 272 tons of caviar, earning nearly $4.3 million. Compared to the same month last year, caviar exports increased by 92.4% in volume and 726.7% in value.

Accumulated in the first seven months of this year, Vietnam exported 1,836 tons of caviar, earning $30.4 million. Compared to the same period last year, caviar exports surged 688% in volume and a whopping 3,790% in value.

The average export price reached $16.5/kg, equivalent to about VND 412,000/kg . Among the seafood industry’s product groups, the average export price of caviar is among the highest-valued items. In comparison, salmon has a price of only $10.6 per kg, while crab and shrimp are exported at $9.8 per kg.

Last year, the country exported nearly 4,000 tons of various caviar products, with a turnover of $65.8 million, down 5.5% in volume but up slightly by 3.7% in value compared to 2022.

Vietnamese caviar has a place in the market due to its price advantage, notably with herring caviar and Ly Son, Quy Nhon flying fish roe. Caviar is highly nutritious and good for health. Compared to Japan and other maritime countries, Vietnamese caviar is competitively priced, making it extremely popular with foreign customers.

According to sources, the domestic selling price of caviar is about VND 320,000 – 350,000/kg. Export products are strictly selected, so the price is higher, at about VND 400,000/kg, and sometimes it can be nearly VND 500,000/kg.

In recent years, Vietnamese caviar, known as the “black diamond” of the ocean, has also made its way to the global dining table with a quality comparable to that of renowned caviar-producing countries. According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnam has been farming trout, a cold-water species, since 2005. The development of trout farming in the northern mountainous provinces and the Central Highlands in recent years has contributed to Vietnam’s ranking among the top ten countries with the largest trout production in the world.

Although the size of the eggs is smaller than that of famous caviar-producing countries, the color and flavor are remarkably similar, making Vietnamese caviar highly desirable. It is even exported to Russia and European countries such as France, Belgium, and Germany.
