At the recent “It’s Glowtime” event held at Apple Park, Apple unveiled not just the iPhone 16 series but also updates to their AirPods and AirPods Max lines. The AirPods 4 boasts enhanced features compared to its predecessor, while the AirPods Max now sports a USB-C connector and additional color options.
This year’s AirPods 4 builds upon the success of its predecessor, the AirPods 3, released in late 2021. Apple claims that the new design is based on the ear shapes of a large number of users, ensuring a comfortable fit.
Under the hood, the AirPods 4 is powered by the H2 chip and features new speakers, promising improved audio quality over the previous generation.
Notably, the AirPods 4 comes in two versions, differentiated by their active noise cancellation (ANC) capabilities. For the first time, the standard AirPods with an Earbuds design incorporates ANC, effectively reducing environmental noise.
Additionally, the AirPods 4 features Adaptive Audio, which automatically adjusts sound based on the user’s environment, ensuring optimal audio quality. It also includes conversation detection, similar to the AirPods Pro, which lowers the volume when the user starts speaking.
The latest AirPods generation adopts a USB-C charging port and offers up to 30 hours of battery life on a full charge.
The AirPods 4 is priced at $129 and $179 for the non-ANC and ANC versions, respectively, and will be available starting September 20.
While the AirPods Pro 2 doesn’t receive any hardware upgrades, Apple will release an update to introduce a hearing aid feature. This feature, combined with an iPhone or iPad running iOS 18, will turn the AirPods Pro 2 into a hearing aid for the hearing-impaired.
To use this feature, users will take a hearing test to identify frequencies they struggle to hear. The device will then employ its Environment Noise Cancellation feature to amplify those frequencies and the volume of the person speaking to the user.
Turning to the AirPods Max, the 2024 edition now features a USB-C connector, bringing it in line with the iPhone 15 and 16 series.
Moreover, the over-ear headphones are now available in new colors: Blue, Purple, Midnight (Black), Starlight (Silver), and Orange.
The upcoming software update will also bring Personalized Spatial Audio to the AirPods Max.
Aside from the connector and color updates, the 2024 AirPods Max retains the fundamental features of its predecessor.
It continues to offer a metal build and a familiar design to Apple users, along with industry-leading active noise cancellation.
The new AirPods Max will also go on sale on September 20, maintaining its original price of $549.
