VinFast is currently the only Vietnamese automobile manufacturer in the country. Besides catering to the domestic market, VinFast has expanded its reach to various international markets, from Southeast Asian countries to those in the European Union, as well as North America.
Among these nations, the United States seems to be the most crucial market. According to statistics, the US has maintained its position as the world’s second-largest vehicle market in recent years, with annual sales of over ten million units.
In the coming period, VinFast will introduce several new car models in this market.
Specifically, VinFast informed Automotive News in August that it would commence sales of its three-row SUV, the VF 9, in the third quarter of 2024. With the launch of the VF 9, it will become the second vehicle model that VinFast offers in the US.
According to S&P Global Mobility data, approximately 1,500 VinFast VF 8s were registered in the US during the first half of this year. The VinFast VF 8, which was introduced in 2023, is the first Vietnamese automobile to be sold in the US.
Following the VF 9, VinFast also intends to launch two other models early next year: the VF 6 and VF 7. Moreover, the VF 3 is also slated to enter the US market. While VinFast has not disclosed detailed plans for the launch of this mini electric car, they will announce updates at the appropriate time.
In addition to its SUV lineup, VinFast is also developing an electric pickup truck, the VinFast VF Wild, which was previously showcased as a concept car. This electric pickup from VinFast boasts a modern design and comes equipped with numerous innovative features, making it highly practical.
However, it is worth noting that there are often significant differences between concept cars and their mass-produced counterparts, as the latter undergoes modifications to meet commercial viability standards.
An interesting fact to note is that the VinFast VF 3 was not initially planned for the US market. However, after receiving positive feedback from distributors during a meeting, VinFast officially included this model in its US strategy. The VinFast VF 3 is likely to be a unique offering in the US automotive market due to its low price, compact size, and fun factor.
VinFast has also shifted its business strategy in the US from direct sales to customers through its own showrooms to collaborating with local car distributors. This approach enables VinFast to reach more states in the US, as their current network of authorized dealerships is only present in California.
In the upcoming period, VinFast will import vehicles manufactured at its factory in Hai Phong, Vietnam, into the US while its plant in North Carolina is still under construction. According to Automotive News, once the North Carolina facility becomes operational, expectedly around 2028, VinFast will produce vehicles there, potentially including the next-generation VF 8 and VF 9.
Based on this plan, we can anticipate upgraded versions of the VF 8 and VF 9 in Vietnam within the next few years. However, Automotive News reports that there are no planned upgrades for the VF 6 and VF 7 until the end of this decade.
