On September 12, the People’s Committee of Bao Loc City, Lam Dong Province, sent a document to the Board of Directors of Friendly Green Environment Joint Stock Company regarding the issue of ensuring domestic solid waste treatment at the plant in Village 2, Dai Lao Commune.
The city leaders demanded that the company implement all necessary measures to receive and treat the city’s domestic solid waste under any circumstances, ensuring normal operations.
In the event that the plant is unable to receive the city’s daily solid waste, the company will be held legally responsible for any environmental sanitation consequences arising from the accumulation of waste in the city, as per relevant laws and regulations.
According to reporters, the Bao Loc Waste Treatment Plant temporarily halted operations starting 4 PM on September 11.
Prior to this, the plant’s management reported to the Bao Loc People’s Committee that they were unable to carry out waste screening, sorting, and incineration due to internal company issues. One of the reasons cited was that the subcontractor had not received advance payments for the staff working at the plant, resulting in a majority of the workers going on leave pending wage payments.
After paying over VND 900 million in overdue wages to employees at the beginning of July 2024, the Friendly Green Environment Joint Stock Company currently owes wages to 70 employees amounting to nearly VND 1.8 billion, and social insurance payments of VND 78.4 million for 12 employees.
The company is awaiting payment from the Bao Loc City Urban Management Division to settle the employees’ wages.
According to the Bao Loc City Urban Management Division, from the beginning of the year until the end of August 2024, they have made nine payments to the company, totaling nearly VND 8.7 billion, as per the contracted unit price. Therefore, the issue of wage payments to employees is not related to the payment for waste treatment by the authorities.
Enhancing Benefits for Informal Waste Pickers
The unsung heroes of the waste recycling process are the scrap dealers; these independent workers have, until recently, quietly gone about their business. Now, thanks to the support initiatives of the “Waste Collectors Network and Coca-Cola Vietnam”, their lives are improving.
