The Soaring Price of Vegetables: Green Gourd Doubles in Price, While Parsley Reaches 250,000 VND/kg Despite Assured Supply.

The cost of vegetables in Hanoi's local markets has doubled since before the third storm, despite assurances of stable supply chains. A stark illustration of this is that 10,000 VND now buys only two stalks of scallions and a small bunch of coriander.

After Storm No.3 made landfall, green squash and cabbage prices at Market 212 in Bac Tu Liem District doubled to VND 35-40,000/kg.

Green vegetable supply is assured, but prices have soared.

A 2-3 kg squash or cabbage now costs consumers VND 70-120,000. Herbs such as fennel, onion, and coriander have also become expensive.

Ms. Lan from Bac Tu Liem District was surprised to find that VND 10,000 only bought her two sprigs of onion leaves and a small bunch of coriander.

Ms. Duong Thi Hue, a Hanoi-based fish cake producer, said green vegetable prices were surging. “Today, I bought 10 kg of fennel in bulk for VND 2.5 million. That’s VND 250,000 per kg” – shared Ms. Hue.

Hanoi and northern supermarkets assert that despite challenges, they will strive to stabilize green vegetable and food prices.

WinMart supermarket representative affirmed: “We are committed to maintaining stable prices despite increased operating and transportation costs.

“Fresh food items like meat, fish, vegetables, and essential products like rice and noodles are available at stable prices. Daily, WinEco supplies 100 tons of clean vegetables to the Northern market,” the WinMart representative added.

According to WinMart, the supermarket system will continue its promotional programs to support customers, including a 20% discount on MEATDeli clean meat and WinEco clean vegetables for members.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien assessed that the storm’s aftermath remains complex, and further damage is possible. Therefore, the agriculture sector needs to join hands to restore production.

The Irrigation Department has instructed units to mobilize all forces to pump out flooded rice fields to mitigate losses. With 22,000 ha of damaged color crops, the Crop Production Department directed early restoration, accompanied by the Plant Protection Department’s solutions to prevent and control field pests and diseases, ensuring production efficiency.
