Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the world’s electric vehicle battery giant, has officially launched a new energy battery with ultra-long life for electric buses, the latest product from its commercial vehicle battery brand, Tectrans.

According to the company, the Tectrans bus battery features an energy density of 175 Wh/kg, the highest in the electric bus industry. CATL claims the battery has a lifespan of up to 15 years or 1.5 million kilometers and comes with a 10-year or 1-million-kilometer warranty. This battery model is also IP69-rated and can withstand 72 hours of immersion in water.

CATL announced that mass production of this battery model will soon commence and revealed that they have partnered with 13 vehicle companies, including Yutong Bus, Golden Dragon, and Dongfeng Motor. The battery manufacturer also stated that this product will be applied to 80 vehicle models.

CATL has consistently achieved milestones in electric vehicle batteries and has continuously launched new products since the beginning of the year. In the field of electric vehicles, the company is planning to introduce the Qilin Battery 2.0, which includes LFP components with 6C fast-charging capability by the end of this year. The ‘C’ refers to the charging coefficient of the battery, and 6C means that, theoretically, the battery can be fully charged in one-sixth of an hour or 10 minutes. Similarly, a 5C battery can be fully charged in 12 minutes.

Previously, CATL’s Shenxing Battery was considered the world’s fastest-charging super battery and cheaper than the Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) battery line, directly impacting the race in the electric vehicle market.

As the world’s largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer, CATL holds a global market share of 37.6% for the first seven months of 2024, according to South Korean market researcher SNE Research. In China, CAT’s market share was 46.2% during the period from January to August, according to the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

After dominating the passenger vehicle battery market, this battery powerhouse has intensified its efforts in the commercial vehicle market. In July, CATL unveiled the Tectrans commercial vehicle battery brand and two L-line batteries for the logistics and distribution industries. The two battery types include a super-fast charging version that can be charged up to 60% in just 12 minutes, in addition to a long-range version.
