A recent incident involving a well-known streamer, IShowSpeed, has caused quite a stir on Vietnamese social media. The streamer was allegedly overcharged for a rented self-balancing scooter service at the Nguyen Hue walking street in Ho Chi Minh City, sparking outrage and negative perceptions of Vietnam’s tourism and its people.
Prior to this incident, the American streamer, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., had been live-streaming his activities in Ho Chi Minh City for over three hours. During his visit to the Nguyen Hue walking street, IShowSpeed was accompanied by a large number of fans.
Two men offering self-balancing scooter rentals approached the streamer and quoted him a price of 100 USD (approximately 2.4 million VND) for a 10-15 minute ride. Despite the surprisingly high price, IShowSpeed agreed and gestured to pay. However, as he pulled out his money, one of the men changed the price, asking for 1 million VND instead of the initially agreed-upon 100 USD.
It is noteworthy that at the time of the incident, IShowSpeed’s livestream had an audience of 169,000 viewers. The act of overcharging quickly sparked outrage among the online community, with many criticizing the two men for taking advantage of foreign tourists and tarnishing the image of Vietnam’s tourism and its people. Most felt that the incident not only affected IShowSpeed’s experience but also damaged the perception of Vietnamese people as friendly and hospitable in the eyes of the international community.
In response to this incident, local authorities took swift action and summoned the two men for questioning to clarify the situation. This proactive measure was taken to maintain a fair and clean tourism environment, protect Vietnam’s tourism reputation, and safeguard the rights and experiences of visitors.
IShowSpeed is a popular YouTuber, streamer, and rapper with a massive global fan base. On September 14, he arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, as part of the Gumball 3000 event. Prior to the incident at Nguyen Hue walking street, IShowSpeed had enjoyable experiences in the city, including visiting Ben Thanh Market, trying out Banh Mi Huynh Hoa, exploring the Museum of 54 Ethnic Groups, and interacting with his Vietnamese fans.
