Hanoi Police reported that Ha Dong District Police recently received and verified a fraud case involving impersonation of police officers and tricking people into installing malware to steal their property.
On August 26, 2024, Ms. L (DOB: 1988; Permanent residence: Ha Dong, Hanoi) received a call from an individual claiming to be an officer from Tan Trieu Commune Police, Thanh Tri District. The caller informed her that her daughter’s ID card had a glitch and was not synchronized with the national population database. The scammer instructed Ms. L to install a fake “Ministry of Public Security” software to make the necessary corrections. After the installation, Ms. L discovered that VND 500 million had been stolen from her bank account. Realizing she had been scammed, Ms. L reported the incident to the police.
Hanoi Police urges residents to be vigilant against such scams. Do not install any software or applications as instructed by unknown callers. Installing malicious software can give scammers control over your entire phone. They can then intercept text messages and calls, redirecting them to their servers without your knowledge. More alarmingly, they can remotely access your accounts and transfer your money.
If you encounter any signs of fraud, promptly report it to the nearest police station for timely intervention and handling in accordance with the law.
