United Nations Summit: Secretary-General Nguyễn Phú Trọng’s Message to the Future Summit.

The event was held online on the eve of the United Nations Future Summit (September 22-23, 2024), with the participation of President of the General Assembly Philemon Yang, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and nearly 50 heads of state and government of UN member states.

Speaking at the event, the UN Secretary-General emphasized the historical significance of the Future Summit and expressed his hope that the documents to be adopted at the summit would serve as an important foundation for guiding the cooperation of the UN system in the coming period.

The messages from world leaders expressed strong support for the Future Summit and the expectation that the summit would agree on concrete solutions and actions to consolidate peace, cooperation, and accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

In his message, Secretary-General Nguyễn Phú Trọng emphasized that the Future Summit is an opportunity for the UN and multilateralism to reaffirm their irreplaceable values in the face of the great challenges of the times.

The Secretary-General hoped that the summit would bring new thinking and approaches for the future of the world and suggested focusing on transformative solutions, including scientific, technological, and innovative transformation, green transition, and global governance reform.

On science and technology, Secretary-General Trọng highlighted the leading role of the UN in establishing a legal framework and supporting countries in developing new and pioneering technologies such as digital technology, artificial intelligence, and automation in a safe, equitable, beneficial, and inclusive manner.

Regarding the green transition, the Secretary-General proposed studying the establishment of a global forum for ASEAN and other regional organizations to share experiences and promote green technologies.

On global governance reform, Secretary-General Trọng expressed his desire to advance the reform of the UN and multilateral financial institutions to better respond to global challenges and mobilize resources to support developing countries.

On this occasion, Secretary-General Trọng affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to actively contributing to the Future Summit and joint efforts to consolidate peace, cooperation, and international solidarity, thus effectively implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring that people fully enjoy the fruits of development, and preparing for future generations.

The Future Summit is the UN’s most important multilateral event of 2024. Under the theme “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Future,” the summit aims to promote the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and climate goals, agree on solutions to global challenges, and strengthen global governance.

The summit is expected to adopt documents guiding the activities of the UN system.

The Global Call to Action for the Future Summit is an initiative of the Presidents of Namibia and Germany, the two countries co-chairing the negotiation process for the summit’s documents. This event aims to create momentum for the Future Summit, taking place on September 22-23 at the UN.
