“Stay Safe: Construction Site Inspections During Storm Season”

The capricious nature of geology, the unruly flow of water, and the perils of unregulated sand mining are very real threats.

As of September 15, the damage to lives and properties caused by the third storm and the subsequent floods has been immense, but the final statistics are not yet available.

The authorities remain immersed in the most challenging rescue and relief operations, searching for faint hopes of survival among the missing, as well as repairing the chaotic transportation infrastructure. Phong Chau Bridge is one such site of devastation.

On September 6, this nearly 30-year-old bridge collapsed, causing multiple people to fall into the Red River. While the exact cause is yet to be determined, the focus is on the strength of the river’s flow after the storm and the stability of the structure, which had undergone multiple repairs over the years.

It is no coincidence that a series of other structures in various locations are also being scrutinized. The Road Management Unit 2 – Vietnam Road Administration is inspecting the condition of bridge pillars constructed many years ago and built using pile-driving methods on routes under their management from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue.

Important bridges like Truong Tien and Phu Xuan will be inspected using both ultrasound and direct diving methods.

The abnormal geology, the unpredictability of water currents, and the concern over unregulated sand exploitation pose real threats.

Hence, conducting inspections of these structures at this time is reasonable, especially with the rainy season and the third storm just passing through. It would be even more prudent for the authorities to apply similar regular inspections to all infrastructures, including roads and areas adjacent to hills and mountains.
