The iPhone Index, compiled by the international e-commerce platform Picodi, is released whenever Apple launches a new product. The index ranks countries by the number of working days one needs to afford an iPhone. This year’s iPhone 16 model with 128GB storage was used for the calculation.

To determine the ranking, Picodi used the official iPhone prices from Apple and compared them to the average wages in each country, sourced from government statistical websites. The number of working days in a month was assumed to be 21. Vietnam, which now has an official Apple Store Online, entered the ranking for the first time last year.

According to the index, Vietnamese need to work 53 days to afford the iPhone 16, which is equivalent to 2.5 months of work, considering the average number of working days per month. While this is an improvement from last year’s 55.6 days, Vietnam still ranks among the countries where people need to work the most to buy an Apple product.

In Southeast Asia, Vietnam ranks above the Philippines but below Thailand and Singapore in terms of the number of working days needed to purchase an iPhone. Specifically, Filipinos need to work 68 days, Thais over 40 days, while Singaporeans only need 5.7 working days.

The iPhone Index also revealed that Turkey, the Philippines, and Brazil are the top three countries where people need to work the most number of days to afford the iPhone 16 Pro, with 72.9, 68.8, and 68.6 days, respectively. In contrast, Switzerland, the US, Australia, and Singapore are the countries where residents need the fewest working days to buy the same model, ranging from 4 to 5.7 days.

However, according to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, the average income of Vietnamese workers in the first half of the year was 7.5 million VND per month. Given that the price of the iPhone 16 Pro 128GB is 28.99 million VND, it may take Vietnamese workers, on average, more than 117 days to afford this model.
