MAUR has announced the completion of a total of nine pedestrian bridges, including left and right branches, connecting the elevated stations of Ho Chi Minh City’s Metro Line 1 along Vo Nguyen Giap Street (Thu Duc City). The construction scope extended over a long distance and intersected with critical underground infrastructure of the city, including water supply, drainage, greenery, high-voltage electricity, lighting, telecommunications, and communication systems. This required close and scientific coordination between MAUR, consultants, contractors, and over 30 infrastructure management units for agreements, interfaces, and design adjustments.
Most of the construction work had to be carried out at night, and the transportation and installation of equipment and large-sized, heavy-loaded beams also faced challenges due to the confined spaces at the construction sites.
The final construction site, located at the right branch of the pedestrian bridge at Thu Duc Station – pillar TH2 in the median of Vo Nguyen Giap Street (at the foot of the Thu Duc steel overpass), faced several difficulties and obstacles during the construction process due to limited construction space (the location at the foot of the steel overpass has a high-density vehicle flow, heavy load, and high traffic speed). This required seamless and effective coordination between units to develop an efficient and safe traffic diversion plan.
According to the investor, the construction site of the pedestrian overpass connecting Thu Duc Station was limited due to the high-density vehicle flow, heavy load, and high traffic speed at the foot of the steel overpass. Photo: MAUR
“The above-mentioned obstacles have been overcome by the contractor, and they successfully installed the last two beam spans of the pedestrian bridge at pillar TH2 – Thu Duc Station (with lengths of 32 to 33.5 meters and weights of 74.5 to 78 tons), completing the connection of all pedestrian bridges of the elevated stations of the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien urban railway project,” MAUR informed.
According to the project investor, the completion of the last beam span installation at Thu Duc Station on September 14 and 15, along with the coordination with Hanoi Highway Investment and Construction Joint Stock Company to complete the improvement of the mini-roundabout and the center of the road at the foot of the Thu Duc steel overpass, was of great importance in restoring traffic in the Thu Duc intersection area affected during the construction period, reducing the timeline by 45 days compared to the original plan to ban vehicles with loads over five tons from traveling through the overpass area from July 27, 2024, to October 29, 2024.
In the coming time, the Urban Railway Management Authority will continue to coordinate with the Department of Transport and related units to officially announce the removal of the bans and restrictions on traffic in the Thu Duc steel overpass area.
MAUR added that the contractor, SCC, is expediting the completion of the architectural finishing of the pedestrian bridges. So far, the contractor has basically completed all architectural items (floor tiling, steel frame structure, roofing, railings, and stairs) at seven out of nine stations (Tan Cang, Thao Dien, An Phu, Rach Chiec, Phuoc Long, Binh Thai, and Cong Nghe Cao) and is striving to complete the last two pedestrian bridges (Thu Duc and National University) in October 2024, in time for the fire protection inspection to complete the Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 1 project and put it into operation by the end of 2024.
