The price of Ri6 and Monthong durian saplings in Hau Giang province has increased to VND 120,000 – 200,000 per tree, a rise of VND 20,000 – 30,000 compared to the dry season. This is due to the high demand for durian trees as they are currently in the rainy season, which is ideal for planting fruit trees, and the high income that durians can bring.
Durian tree nurseries in Hau Giang province are struggling to keep up with the demand as many farmers are focusing on planting durian trees. The shortage of durian rootstock for bud grafting has caused an increase in the price of durian saplings. The province has seen a significant increase in durian planting area, with a nearly 700-hectare expansion compared to the previous year. The two most popular durian varieties in the province are Ri6 and Monthong, with a total planting area of over 2,500 hectares. Approximately 1,000 hectares of durian trees are ready for harvest, yielding an average of 14-16 tons of fruit per hectare.
The high prices of durian fruit in the past months, especially in February and March, when the price reached VND 110,000-130,000 per kg, have encouraged many farmers in the province to expand their durian plantations. The income from durian trees can reach billions of VND per hectare, making it a very lucrative crop.
The authorities in Hau Giang province are advising farmers to carefully consider before expanding their durian planting area to avoid an oversupply in the market, which could lead to significant losses for farmers.
