“It was an unimaginable phase. No one thought Vietnam could develop software for the world. They thought I was too outrageous,” said Dr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of FPT, in a recent documentary on the American TV channel, Discovery.
The documentary, titled “Silicon Delta – The Story of Vietnam’s Tech Revolution,” showcases Vietnam’s transformation and the significant contributions of its information technology (IT) industry.

“A nation that is strongly transforming and confidently stepping towards the future of technology, a nation with an average GDP growth rate of 6.6%, and an innovation hub of the world,” commented Discovery.
Since the late 1980s, Vietnam has transformed from a post-war struggling economy to one of the leading technology centers in Asia.
FPT Chairman: “People thought I was too outrageous!”

FPT was established in 1988 with the initial goal of “helping my friends out of poverty,” recalled Mr. Binh.
A turning point for FPT came in 1998 with a strategy conference held in Hai Phong, aiming to “take FPT to a new height.” Here, FPT outlined its “Export or Die” strategy, and Mr. Binh decided that the only way for FPT to develop was to Go Global and export software.
Mr. Binh’s decision was considered “crazy.” Many also called him a “madman” for deciding to export software at that time.
“More than two decades ago, no one thought Vietnam could develop software for the world. Just keep going, and the path will unfold,” shared the founder of FPT.
“Mr. Binh was truly crazy. He talked about things that were out of this world, while we were still grounded. How could we reach for the sky?” expressed Mr. Pham Minh Tuan, Vice President of FPT and CEO of FPT Software.
The Flight of Vietnam’s Tech Birds

“FPT, along with other IT businesses, has formed a flock of Vietnamese tech birds flying worldwide, asserting the country’s position on the global digital technology map.”
“Now, Vietnam has 1 million IT engineers, half of whom are programmers. If we can focus these resources on the fields of semiconductors and artificial intelligence, Vietnam will not only meet domestic demands but also supply the world,” shared Mr. Binh.
From being a nameless country on the world’s digital technology map, Vietnam has overcome challenges and become one of the region’s leading digital economies. It is now ideally positioned to lead the new technology revolution and become a global technology hub and resource center.
“It’s incredible to witness Vietnam’s growth over the past two decades. This is a story that has never been told before. Vietnam is undergoing a powerful transformation, breaking boundaries in critical areas such as automotive software technology, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence,” commented Mr. Vinnie Lauria, Co-founder of Golden Gate Ventures, a venture capital fund.
The Discovery documentary, lasting over 20 minutes, was broadcast in Southeast Asia, Germany, and Japan and released in ten languages, including English, Japanese, German, Korean, and Vietnamese.
The film is divided into three parts. The first part depicts Vietnam’s struggles after the war and how, with its renewal policy, the country not only attracted large foreign technology companies like IBM, Microsoft, and HP but also ignited the entrepreneurial spirit, giving rise to pioneering businesses like FPT that propelled the nation’s economic development.
The second part of the film takes viewers on a journey of bringing Vietnamese intelligence to the global stage, putting Vietnam on the world map of digital technology. Despite economic crises and the dot-com bubble, Vietnamese tech companies persevered and established the country as an attractive software outsourcing destination.
The third part showcases the resilience in overcoming the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the capacity for innovation, embracing new technology trends such as AI, semiconductors, and automotive. Vietnam is steadily asserting its intelligence on the global digital technology map and rising as a new technology hub and resource center.
