Bidding Farewell to a Beloved Landmark: McDonald’s Ben Thanh to Close its Doors on September 19th, 2024.

In a recent announcement, McDonald’s revealed that its Ben Thanh branch, one of the chain’s first outlets in Vietnam, will be closing down. The restaurant, located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, has been a beloved fixture for locals and tourists alike since its opening in May 2014.

“Although we are saddened to say goodbye, at 2 am on 09/19/2024, McDonald’s Ben Thanh will conclude its 10-year journey of emotional companionship. Thank you for making this decade brilliant and meaningful,” McDonald’s wrote in a heartfelt message to its customers.

The reason behind the closure of McDonald’s Ben Thanh has not been disclosed. However, the decision to shut down one of the chain’s oldest restaurants in Vietnam has left many customers feeling nostalgic and disappointed.

McDonald’s Ben Thanh was the second branch opened by the American fast-food giant in Vietnam, just three months after their initial launch in the country. With a total area of nearly 660 square meters, the three-story restaurant offered 24-hour service and could accommodate around 260 guests, including 180 indoor and 80 outdoor seats, providing a pleasant view of the green space of 23/9 Park.

Despite McDonald’s initial plans to open 100 restaurants in Vietnam within 10 years, the company has only managed to achieve slightly over a third of this goal. Currently, they operate 36 outlets in major provinces and cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Binh Duong, Khanh Hoa, and Hai Phong.

The closure of McDonald’s Ben Thanh follows a similar announcement by another prominent F&B brand, Starbucks, which recently decided to shut down its Reserve store on Han Thuyen Street.

“After careful consideration of various factors, we regret to inform you that the Starbucks Reserve Han Thuyen store will cease operations on August 26th. Starbucks Reserve will return soon in a different location,” the American coffee chain announced.
