Hanoi Police reported that the Police of Son Tay Town have recently received and verified a fraud case involving impersonation of police officers and tricking people into installing malware to steal their assets.
On August 15, 2024, Ms. N (born in 1991; residing in Co Dong, Son Tay, Hanoi) received a call from an individual claiming to be a police officer. This person asked Ms. N to come to the police station for electronic identification, and offered to assist her remotely by installing the Government Portal software if she was unable to make it to the station.
After installing the fake software, Ms. N discovered that more than VND 600 million had been stolen from her bank account. Realizing she had been scammed, Ms. N reported the incident to the police.
Hanoi Police urge residents to be cautious of such scams and refrain from installing any software or applications as requested by unknown callers. Installing malicious software can give scammers control over one’s phone, allowing them to intercept text messages and calls without the victim’s knowledge. Additionally, they can remotely access the victim’s mobile phone, compromising their accounts and funds.
If you encounter any signs of fraud, it is crucial to report it promptly to the nearest police station for timely intervention and handling in accordance with the law.
