On September 18, 2024, the Vietnam Energy Transition Initiative (VETI), in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Vietnam Low Emission Energy Program II (V-LEEP II), and Selex Motors, a leading smart electric vehicle company, inaugurated a two-wheeled electric vehicle battery swap station in Da Nang City. This initiative aligns with the cityโs goal of constructing an energy-efficient and energy-saving urban model for the period of 2019โ2030.
The VNEEP3 program aims to achieve a 5โ7% energy savings target for the nation between 2019 and 2025 and an 8โ10% target between 2019 and 2030. This includes reducing gasoline and diesel consumption in transportation by 5% compared to the projected fuel demand of the industry.
Selex Motors is the first and only company in the region and in Vietnam to establish and expand a shared battery swap station network. With its proprietary technology, Selex has designed the first standardized battery compatible with 70% of the electric motorcycle models on the market. This advantage allows customers of various electric vehicle brands to utilize the same battery-swapping infrastructure, paving the way for the development of a shared energy infrastructure for electric motorcycles.
According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Phuoc Nguyen, CEO of Selex Motors, with the support of the VLEEP II program and Da Nang City, Selex Motors has installed four battery swap stations in August and plans to establish a minimum of 20 automatic battery swap stations in the city in the near future, prioritizing tourism and ride-hailing services. Notably, the company will construct a battery swap station connecting the cities of Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An, creating an electric motorcycle tourism corridor along this route.
Prior to Da Nang, Selex Motors had already developed approximately 80 shared battery swap stations in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hue. The introduction of this shared battery swap network demonstrates the feasibility of different electric vehicle brands utilizing a shared energy infrastructure, similar to that of gasoline-powered vehicles. In June 2024, Selex Motors partnered with Son Ha Group to expand the shared battery swap network for two-wheeled electric vehicles. As a result, Son Haโs EVGo electric motorcycle models can also utilize the battery swap stations and interchangeable batteries offered by Selex Motors.
Earlier, in February 2024, Selex Motors signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Samsung SDI to supply battery cells and promote the development of shared battery swap stations in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
