Vietnam’s frozen durian export turnover in 2024 is expected to reach USD 300 million. This information was shared by Mr. Huynh Tan Dat, Director of the Plant Protection Department – Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, at a conference on disseminating regulations on exporting frozen durian to the Chinese market, organized by the Plant Protection Department and Vietnam Agricultural Newspaper in Hanoi on September 19.
In August, China opened its market to Vietnamese durian by signing a protocol for the import of frozen durian segments into the country. This presents an opportunity for the industry to enhance its value and mitigate risks associated with relying solely on fresh product exports.
According to the Plant Protection Department, in 2023, China spent approximately USD 6.7 billion on importing fresh durian from various countries and an additional USD 1 billion on importing frozen durian from Thailand and Malaysia.
With the recently signed protocol, Vietnam’s frozen durian export turnover in 2024 is projected to reach USD 300 million, considering China’s current capacity and market demand. However, the Plant Protection Department acknowledges that the Vietnamese frozen durian industry still faces challenges, particularly concerning food safety and traceability. If we fail to address these issues and raise awareness about compliance with regulations, the Chinese authorities may take corrective actions. Therefore, in the coming time, the Plant Protection Department will organize training courses to guide local governments and businesses on these matters.
