Ho Chi Minh City has recently adopted a Green Growth Action Plan for the 2024 – 2030 period to promote sustainable logistics solutions, in line with the city’s strategy for green and sustainable economic development.

This information was shared by Ms. Cao Thi Phi Van, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Trade and Investment Promotion Center (ITPC), at a green business forum titled “Sustainable Logistics Solutions in Industrial Transformation: from Factory to Industrial Park and Seaport” held on September 24, 2024.

With this plan, Ho Chi Minh City aims to promote a circular economy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, address climate change, and contribute to poverty eradication, thereby fostering sustainable economic growth.

The city has outlined 14 key tasks, including green finance, high-quality human resources, green connectivity, green energy, clean water and water recycling, material recycling, green consumption, green transportation, green buildings and energy efficiency, green science entrepreneurship and innovation, urban green spaces and green agriculture, and the preservation of Can Gio’s ecosystem.

“These tasks are imperative to steer the city’s economy towards sustainability and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change,” emphasized Ms. Van.

Experts argue that, given the global trend towards “greening,” logistics is recognized as a highly polluting and energy-intensive industry. Therefore, the development of green logistics is an urgent issue that businesses need to address. For the logistics industry, going green has become a mandatory requirement to participate in the supply chains of global manufacturers and suppliers.

According to statistics, there are over 40,000 businesses operating in the fields of transportation and warehousing in Vietnam’s logistics market, including prominent global names such as DHL, CJ Logistics, and Maersk Lines. Vietnamese enterprises also include strong players like Transimex, Sotran, and Tan Cang Saigon, capable of competing with foreign companies operating in Vietnam.

One of Vietnam’s advantages in attracting investment and promoting economic development lies in its participation in numerous Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), particularly next-generation FTAs like CPTPP, EVFTA, and UKVFTA. These agreements set high standards for production processes, emphasizing green energy and clean materials, presenting both opportunities and challenges for Vietnamese businesses, especially in terms of process innovation and meeting international sustainability standards.

In line with the national goal of green economic development, Ho Chi Minh City has been collaborating with domestic and foreign partners to pursue sustainable development goals, taking into account regional characteristics and geographical specifics.

From a business perspective, Ms. Catherine Tran, Director of Leong Lee International Co., Ltd., highlighted the importance of energy autonomy and efficient transportation as a green solution for enterprises.
