This small-scale project aimed to enhance the quality of life within a typical Hanoi apartment by creating an open and flexible living space that embraces nature. The project also sought to foster human connection and eliminate spatial barriers caused by the original layout.
Initially, the apartment was divided into small rooms, including two bedrooms adjacent to the exterior and a common living area next to the interior hallway.
The walls of the rooms reduced the apartment’s ability to receive natural light and ventilation, resulting in a dim and confined common area with a dull view.
The proposed design solution involved breaking down the walls and relocating the living area to the center of the apartment.
The two bedrooms on either side are separated by sliding wooden partitions, which can be opened or closed as needed. During the day, when the partitions are retracted, the spaces seamlessly connect, allowing light and air to flow freely throughout.
In this new configuration, occupants can see each other from any location within the apartment, fostering increased interaction and a sense of community during daily activities.
When privacy is desired, the partitions can be closed, forming separate and independent bedrooms. Meanwhile, the central living area remains well-ventilated and illuminated, offering a pleasant view of the outdoors.
In addition to transforming the spatial character, the apartment’s interior design embraces simplicity and harmony, minimizing furniture while ensuring a comfortable family lifestyle.
The apartment’s living area forgoes a traditional sofa setup, instead featuring a long table and chairs. This multi-purpose space serves as a place for work, gatherings, conversations, dining, and relaxation.
The primary material palette consists of light-colored wood combined with white walls and ceilings, with minimal decorative elements to create a sense of spaciousness and softness.
Through this project, the design team offers a simple yet effective solution to enhance the living spaces of typical apartments in Vietnam, creating a flexible and modern living environment.
