On September 24, at a press conference announcing the Green Economy Forum and Exhibition (GEFE) 2024, Mr. Bruno Jaspaert, the new Chairman of EuroCham, stated that the third storm had caused widespread damage in 26 provinces, not only in terms of material but also in spirit, with a high number of casualties. This is a stark reminder that climate change is no longer a distant threat but an urgent crisis that demands immediate collective action.

GEFE 2024 will serve as an important platform to foster dialogue between government leaders, businesses, and international organizations to address the pressing realities of climate change. Simultaneously, GEFE will be a venue for European companies to introduce their most advanced solutions, helping Vietnam achieve more sustainable development in the future.

With the theme “Shaping the Green Future,” GEFE 2024 will focus on the urgent need for action to address the impacts of climate change and build a greener economy for Vietnam.

With nearly 30 workshops spanning 10 green topics and a high-level opening session, GEFE 2024 is an ideal platform to explore diverse sustainable development themes.

With over 8,000 guests from various fields, including B2B and B2G dialogues, attendees will have the opportunity to interact with industry leaders and government officials.

Notably, the high-level opening session on October 21 will bring together senior leaders from the public and private sectors. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh is expected to attend, along with the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Mr. Péter Szijjártó, the Minister of Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade of Finland, Ville Tapani Tavio, the UK’s Trade Deputy Representative in Southeast Asia, Ms. Rhiannon Harries – UK High Commissioner in Singapore, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Van Mai, and Mr. Julien Guerrier – EU Ambassador to Vietnam…

The high-level opening session and thematic workshops of GEFE 2024 will focus on promoting the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), integrating sustainable energy solutions through Power Planning 8, and implementing the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

Additionally, topics such as direct power purchase agreements, carbon pricing, green finance for climate change, and the transition to a regenerative farming system, green infrastructure models, and innovative rainwater management will offer practical solutions from leaders in both the public and private sectors.

With the active participation of EU member states and significant contributions from the UK and Switzerland, GEFE 2024 will testify to the strong partnership between Vietnam and Europe, fostering joint progress towards a green future and realizing Net-Zero.

“The participation of high-level representatives from Europe will enrich the dialogues with global perspectives and practical solutions, underscoring the importance of the international community, especially Europe, in supporting Vietnam’s green transition,” emphasized Mr. Alain Cany, Co-Chairman of GEFE and Chairman of EuroCham Vietnam Advisory Board.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Julien Guerrier, Ambassador of the European Union to Vietnam, shared that as investors, European businesses seek not only profits in Vietnam but also to bring benefits to the country.

European companies are leading not only in the public-private sector but also in striving for a greener future. As climate change is a global challenge, the EU’s role is to accompany its global trading partners in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The transition to a greener economy for EU businesses is even more important than considering the investment activities of European companies in Vietnam. Since the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) took effect four years ago, bilateral trade between the two countries has increased by 40%. This means that the agreement has not only benefited businesses on both sides, but European businesses have also brought growth, jobs, technology, sustainable development, and environmental protection to Vietnam.

Vietnam aims to become a developed country by 2045 and achieve sustainable development. EU businesses will support Vietnam in this orientation. Vietnam has great potential to achieve that future. This path is not an easy one, but the EU is committed to supporting the promotion of Vietnam’s green transition.
