AEON Vietnam has just inaugurated a new 7,000 sq. m. general merchandise store and supermarket in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 8. This AEON store is located within another shopping center called Parc Mall, through an invitation from a local real estate partner.
This is not the first time AEON has been present within another shopping mall. Previously, the group had AEON The Nine in Hanoi, AEON Sora Gardens SC in Binh Duong, and most recently, AEON located within the Cresent Mall in District 7 of Ho Chi Minh City.
As of now, AEON Vietnam operates seven large shopping centers in Vietnam, focusing on key cities such as Hanoi, Hai Phong, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City.
In the first nine months of 2024, AEON opened three general merchandise stores and supermarkets in Vietnam. The most recent one is the largest shopping center in Central Vietnam, with a total investment of VND 4,000 billion in Hue.
Having declared Vietnam as a key market after Japan, AEON has invested 1.5 billion USD in the country over the past decade. This year, the group plans to inaugurate another AEON General Merchandise Store & Supermarket in Xuan Thuy, Hanoi, in December.
Mr. Furusawa Yasuyuki, Executive Officer of AEON Group (Japan) in charge of the Vietnamese market and General Director of AEON Vietnam, shared: “AEON will accelerate the development of our network and open new business locations, thereby increasing ‘touchpoints’ with customers.”
Regarding the expansion strategy, Mr. Furusawa Yasuyuki stated that they would continue to develop large-scale shopping centers. Additionally, to meet the evolving shopping needs and prioritize customer convenience post-pandemic, AEON will diversify its retail formats with varying scales to suit the local community’s needs and the realities of each region.
Sharing AEON Vietnam’s performance for the first eight months of the year, Mr. Tetsuyuki Nakagawa revealed that despite global economic challenges, AEON Vietnam recorded positive growth this year, with a 15% increase in revenue from existing stores compared to the same period last year. However, the rise in essential goods’ prices and consumers’ spending tightening have somewhat impacted business results.
Currently, AEON is one of Japan’s largest retail groups, operating in various fields, including supermarkets, department stores, shopping centers, and financial services. In 2023, AEON’s global revenue reached approximately 63 billion USD.
In Southeast Asia, Aeon has shopping malls in three countries: Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia. Among these, Vietnam stands out as a shining star in the region, receiving significant attention from Aeon. According to Aeon’s assessment, Vietnam and China are two high-growth potential areas where they aim to accelerate the opening of shopping malls within their three-year mid-term plan.
In Vietnam, AEON started its operations in 2009 as a representative office (from 12/01/2009 to 10/07/2012). In October 2011, AEON Vietnam Co., Ltd. was officially established in Ho Chi Minh City. This event marked a crucial milestone in the Japanese giant’s journey into Vietnam’s retail market.
In 2014, AEON made its first investment by opening AEON Mall Tan Phu in Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City. In the following years, the group continuously invested in and developed additional shopping centers in many provinces and major cities nationwide.
