The Future of Aviation: Vietnam Airlines’ Commitment to Sustainability and Environmental Conservation
In a significant step towards sustainability, the aviation industry has embarked on a green journey, encouraging airlines to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by adopting cleaner fuels and recycling initiatives, among other eco-friendly practices.
Airlines worldwide have initiated flights powered by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), paving the way for a more sustainable future for the aviation industry. SAF offers two options: blending with conventional jet fuel or using 100% clean SAF produced without fossil fuels. The latter holds the most promise for reducing carbon emissions, with a potential reduction of up to 84% over the fuel’s life cycle. SAF is crucial to achieving the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
However, challenges remain in the form of limited supply and high costs. For instance, in 2023, SAF accounted for only 0.2% of all aviation fuel used in global commercial operations. Nonetheless, Vietnam Airlines, as the national carrier, is determined to lead the way in adopting this sustainable fuel.
On May 27, 2024, Vietnam Airlines made history by operating a passenger flight, VN660, from Singapore to Hanoi, using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This marked the first time an airline in Vietnam used sustainable fuel for commercial flights. Vietnam Airlines has also implemented various sustainability initiatives, including fuel-saving programs and environmental protection campaigns, such as plastic bag collection and the “Zero Waste Vietnam Airlines” project. Additionally, they focus on engine maintenance and improvements to enhance operational efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. The introduction of new-generation aircraft, such as the Airbus A321neo, Airbus A350, and Boeing 787, further contributes to fuel efficiency and noise reduction.
Embracing sustainability as a core value, Vietnam Airlines is committed to environmental protection and social responsibility, aiming to enhance the quality of life for the community. For domestic flights, the airline has chosen Con Dao as the first location to implement its “Sustainable Flight” project, focusing on environmental conservation and protection of the local landscape.
Starting March 15, all plastic waste and bags from flights are collected and brought back to the mainland for proper disposal. Flight attendants also encourage passengers to join Con Dao in its environmental efforts by reducing single-use plastic products during their stay on the island. In September, Vietnam Airlines collaborated with the Con Dao People’s Committee to launch the “Lighten Up to Con Dao” campaign, urging passengers to reduce luggage weight to lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The campaign also emphasizes minimizing the use of nylon and single-use plastic to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainability on the island.
“Con Dao is not just a tourist destination known for its stunning beaches and untouched nature but also for its sacred historical sites that bear witness to the nation’s heroic struggle,” shared Vietnam Airlines’ leadership. “Protecting the environment and promoting sustainability on this island is the shared responsibility of businesses and individuals alike.”
