In 2023, Vietnam broke records for durian exports, with a turnover of over $2.2 billion, equivalent to about 600,000 tons. And as of September 2024, durian exports have surpassed this record.

According to the Vietnam Vegetable and Fruit Association, durian exports reached $2.5 billion in the first nine months of 2024. Overall, fruit and vegetable exports reached nearly $5.7 billion, a record high. Other fruits such as dragon fruit, bananas, jackfruit, and mangoes also contributed significantly to export growth.

Vietnam’s durian exports are booming due to competitive pricing. In the first four months of this year, the average price of Vietnamese durian was $4,662 per ton, compared to China’s average import price of $5,395. Due to climatic characteristics, durian is mostly grown in Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Cambodia…

As of 2023, Vietnam ranked third in durian cultivation area and yield (nearly 1.2 million tons), after Indonesia (1.8 million tons) and Thailand (over 1.32 million tons). According to the General Statistics Office, from 2017 to 2022, the average durian cultivation area in Vietnam increased by 24.5% per year.

Since July 11, 2022, Vietnamese durian has been officially exported to China through all border gates under a three-year protocol agreement between the two countries. And on August 19, the two countries signed a protocol on frozen durian exports, opening up a significant opportunity for Vietnamese agricultural products.

Vietnam shares a border with China, which provides convenient transportation and lower logistics costs as durians only need to be transported through the northern border gates instead of through two or three border gates like Thai durians.

According to experts, the outlook for fruit and vegetable exports in 2024 remains positive. Especially now that it is the harvest season for durians in the Central Highlands, which will last until the end of October.

It is predicted that durian exports in 2024 will exceed $3 billion and significantly contribute to the fruit and vegetable export turnover of Vietnam, which may exceed $7 billion for the first time. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure quality and quantity while complying with the standards and regulations of the importing country to achieve new records in fruit and vegetable export turnover.

The Director of the Southern Fruit Research Institute, under the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences, called on all parties involved in the Vietnamese durian industry to pay closer attention to China’s legal requirements and standards, which are becoming increasingly stringent for imported fruits.

Relevant parties in Vietnam need to strengthen the management of durian growing areas and packaging facilities to ensure competitive prices and safety, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnamese fruits in the Chinese market.
