The Deputy Prime Minister, Tran Hong Ha, has directed the Ministry of Transport to take charge of the expansion project of Phu Cat Airport in Binh Dinh Province. This decision was made after considering the reports and discussions with the provincial People’s Committee and the Ministry of Transport. The expansion project will be managed by the provincial authorities, with the support of the Ministries of Planning and Investment, Finance, National Defense, Justice, and Natural Resources and Environment.

Phu Cat Airport

The Ministry of Planning and Investment will provide guidance to the Binh Dinh People’s Committee on matters related to public investment laws. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Finance will offer instructions on matters pertaining to state budget laws.

Phu Cat Airport, constructed in the 1960s and 1970s, began civil aviation operations in 1985. After six decades of use, the airport has deteriorated, and its low capacity can only accommodate reduced operations of aircraft types such as A320/321 and their equivalents. The aircraft parking area can accommodate seven parking positions, and the passenger terminal and technical infrastructure are synchronized to handle approximately 2 million passengers annually.

The approved aviation planning for Phu Cat Airport for the period 2021-2030, with a vision towards 2050, includes the construction of a second runway parallel to the existing one, approximately 215 meters apart, to facilitate relatively independent civil and military aviation operations.

As per the proposal presented by the Binh Dinh People’s Committee, the planned expansion of Phu Cat Airport includes the construction of a second runway, connecting taxiways, and other works in the airport area. It also involves the relocation of military facilities to release land for the expansion of the civil aviation area and the construction of a new civil aviation complex.

In the immediate future, the construction of the second runway, connecting taxiways, and other associated works in the airport area, with a total investment of approximately VND 3,013 billion, will be prioritized to meet the local socio-economic development demands.
