On October 24, while attending the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Kazan, Russia, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with the Chairman of the Eurasian Economic Council (EEC), Bakytzhan Sagintayev.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Vietnam highly appreciates the role of the EEC in promoting the effective implementation of commitments under the Vietnam-Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) Free Trade Agreement over the years. The Prime Minister emphasized that after nearly a decade, the FTA has contributed to a solid framework for cooperation, taking the relationship between Vietnam and EAEU member states to a deeper level, bringing about substantial benefits for both sides.

Chairman Bakytzhan Sagintayev extended his congratulations to Chairman of the National Assembly Luong Cuong on his election to the new position. He affirmed that the FTA has positively contributed to the trade growth between the parties. He expressed his pleasure at witnessing the growth of two-way trade turnover, from $1.8 billion in 2021 to $6.8 billion in 2023. With the positive results achieved, he believed that cooperation between the two sides will continue to prosper in the coming time.

Both sides agreed to continue the effective implementation of the Vietnam-EAEU Free Trade Agreement, meeting the cooperation needs and economic potential of Vietnam and the EAEU. They agreed to further open their markets, timely address trade obstacles and barriers, and resolve difficulties related to payment, transportation, and movement of people and entrepreneurs.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh suggested that the EAEU explore forms of cooperation in supply chain development, maritime and railway transportation, and logistics to boost trade exchanges between Vietnam and Central Asian countries and individual EAEU member states.

The Prime Minister also requested that EAEU member states consider removing threshold safeguard measures and raising quotas for some Vietnamese goods. He emphasized the need to enhance cooperation in a harmonious interest and risk-sharing spirit, making better use of existing potentials to create breakthroughs in economic and trade relations.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister cordially invited the EEC Chairman to visit Vietnam, which he gladly accepted.
