The UNESCO Office in Hanoi, the School of Inter-faculty and Arts, and the Ninh Binh Tourism Department have organized a conference to announce the Research Project on Assessing the Economic Value of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex.
Mr. Jonathan Baker, Head of the UNESCO Office in Hanoi, emphasized that accurately identifying and assessing the economic and brand value of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex as a World Heritage Site provides not only scientific and practical foundations for sustainable management, conservation, and promotion of the heritage’s value but also enhances community awareness and responsibility.
Providing an overview of the Trang An Heritage after a decade of being recognized as a Mixed World Heritage Site, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Thuc, Head of the Research Project on “Assessing the Economic Value of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex,” developed the Project through four research branches: Natural Heritage, Cultural Heritage, Settlement Heritage, and Tourism Economics, along with the outstanding complex values of humanity and Southeast Asia.
The Project assessed the brand and economic value of representative sites and structures within the heritage that are being conserved and utilized for tourism activities.
It also evaluated the overall brand and economic value of the Mixed World Heritage Site of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex in the context of policies, strategies, planning, and community engagement, with a focus on heritage management and specialized research.
By quantifying the value, supplementing data, and providing a foundation for policy orientation, the Project aims to leverage the Trang An – Hoa Lu heritage as a driving force for tourism, heritage, and creative economy development, and to conserve the heritage as a source for the development of a Millennium Heritage City in the context of rapid urbanization in Vietnam.
Additionally, the Project aims to promote the brand of the Mixed World Heritage Site of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex globally, within Southeast Asia, and across nations in the context of globalization. It seeks to integrate the Trang An Heritage into networks of World Heritage Cities, Creative Cities, and Global Learning Cities of UNESCO.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Thuc also clarified that the Project will answer scientific questions regarding the economic value of the heritage and the economic value brought about by the opportunities it presents in terms of conservation, exploitation, and promotion of the heritage’s value.
The Project’s assessment results will be published internationally in scientific journals and communicated through international media, showcasing the present and future opportunity values of this significant Complex World Heritage Site.
Moreover, the Project, “Assessing the Economic Value of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex,” serves the implementation phase of the Ninh Binh Province Planning approved by the Prime Minister in March 2024, which includes developing Hoa Lu City from the roots of the Trang An Heritage Complex, characterized as a Millennium Heritage City and a Creative City, with the aspiration of becoming a centrally governed city by 2035.
Quantifying the value of the heritage also contributes to policy formulation for a sustainable development model linked to the heritage, tourism, and creative economy as a new driving force.
At the conference, Mr. Bui Van Manh, Director of Ninh Binh Tourism Department, emphasized that the Project will serve as a foundation for developing policies and strategies to effectively, sustainably, and harmoniously exploit the potential and strengths of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex while preserving its unique historical, cultural, and natural values as a World Heritage Site.

“The Fertilizer Industry’s Plea: Remove the 5% VAT or Risk Our Decline and Halt Production.”
The latest amendments to the Value-Added Tax Law fail to address the long-standing issue faced by the domestic fertilizer industry. As a result, this vital sector continues to be discriminated against, excluded from the scope of value-added tax applicability. This exclusion puts the industry at risk of reverting to the decline and stagnation witnessed during 2015-2020, threatening its very survival.
