Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, Secretary-General of the Vietnam Vegetables and Fruits Association, said that Vietnam currently has a monopoly on durian, which is why the prices are so high, especially during the off-season when the output is low. At certain times when there is a demand, wholesalers are willing to buy Monthong variety A durians at 200,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Nguyen added that the primary market for durian is China. Vietnam may surpass Thailand in exporting to this market within the next one to two years.
In 2024, Thailand concluded its durian season with an export value of 3.7 billion USD, a decrease from the previous year. Meanwhile, Vietnam is estimated to have achieved 3.5 billion USD, a significant increase of about 60%.
According to the Vietnam Vegetables and Fruits Association, by the end of October, the country had exported 6.16 billion USD worth of vegetables and fruits, with the Chinese market accounting for nearly 4.1 billion USD. The most impressive export item was durian, with a value of approximately 2.9 billion USD.
Chinese consumers have a strong preference for durian, but domestic cultivation in China has not been successful, limited to experimental planting in Hainan Island. As a result, China relies on imports, mainly from Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
