According to Mr. Nguyen Van Nhu, Chairman of Tra Vinh City People’s Committee (Tra Vinh Province), Tra Vinh City currently has 87 roads, 48 of which are lined with 14,463 trees.

Among these, there are approximately 800 trees that are over 100 years old, mostly comprising oil, star anise, rosewood, and me trees.

Thanks to this abundance of greenery, Tra Vinh City has earned the reputation of being the city with the most trees in Vietnam. In March 2024, according to a report published by IQAir, Tra Vinh City ranked 3rd among the top 15 cities with the cleanest air in Southeast Asia and was ranked as having the cleanest air in Vietnam.

In April 2023, for the first time, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Vietnam announced the Provincial Green Index (PGI), with “Tree City” Tra Vinh proudly ranking 1st out of 63 provinces and cities in the country.

Tra Vinh City is determined to build a smart transportation infrastructure while protecting the environment.

At the 2024 Southwestern Urban Cluster Conference held in Ben Tre Province on November 8, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported Mr. Nhu’s words, stating that while the number of vehicles, especially cars, is increasing, the roads cannot be widened due to the dense tree coverage.

According to the provincial directive, when expanding the transportation system, urban infrastructure development must absolutely ensure that the green tree system remains unaffected.

Mr. Nhu also shared that in the future, Tra Vinh City will vigorously promote the construction of smart transportation infrastructure in conjunction with environmental protection through specific plans.

Tra Vinh will proactively cooperate in training high-quality human resources, researching policies, and developing smart transportation solutions based on big data, artificial intelligence, and digital maps for intra-city and inter-city transportation systems.

Tra Vinh City Gives “Special Care” to Ancient Trees

According to VnExpress, Mr. Nguyen Van Lieu, Vice Chairman of Tra Vinh City People’s Committee, shared that while the city is expanding its development space, it also prioritizes the preservation of its green trees.

According to Mr. Lieu, Tra Vinh City has been planned with a population scale of 200,000 people by 2030. In the future, five communes from two districts, Cang Long and Chau Thanh, will be merged into the city. The economic and social infrastructure, including transportation, urban areas, commerce, services, healthcare, and education, have been planned for new investments. The city’s administrative center will also be relocated to this expanded urban area.

“This move aims to create a new development space that meets the needs of the people, which is equivalent to protecting, preserving, and conserving the existing green tree system, especially the ancient tree ‘forest’,” said Mr. Lieu, emphasizing that the common perspective is that in the area where the city is about to expand, environmental and ecological issues must remain a top priority.

Tra Vinh City achieves an average green coverage of 29.15 square meters per capita.

“Tra Vinh City currently has a natural area of 68 square kilometers with a population of about 115,000 people, and an average green coverage of 29.15 square meters per capita,” said Mr. Lieu, attributing this achievement to the locality’s determination to protect, preserve, and restore the green tree system, especially the ancient trees over 100 years old.

During the 2017-2020 period, Tra Vinh City invested 20 billion VND in a project to provide “special care” to hundreds of ancient trees showing signs of weakening. Various measures were implemented, including fertilization, soil improvement, direct injection of seawater (nutrients) into the tree trunks, and removal of concrete sidewalks hugging the tree bases. As a result, nearly 400 ancient trees along 15 roads were successfully restored and are now thriving.

Tra Vinh City is the provincial capital of Tra Vinh Province, located south of the Tien River. The city enjoys a convenient transportation system, with well-developed road and waterway networks, facilitating economic and cultural development with other provinces in the Mekong Delta. It is also an economic focal point of the province.

In 2010, Tra Vinh City was established based on the town of Tra Vinh. In 2016, the Prime Minister recognized Tra Vinh City as a second-tier city under the authority of Tra Vinh Province.

According to the Tra Vinh Provincial Planning for the period of 2021 – 2030, with a vision towards 2050, Tra Vinh City (expanded to include parts of Chau Thanh and Cang Long districts) is the political, economic, cultural, and social center of the province. Tra Vinh City, along with the districts of Cang Long, Cau Ke, and Chau Thanh, are areas for comprehensive economic development. Agricultural production is focused on the districts of Cau Ke and Tien Can.
