In March 2021, the Vietnam Aviation Authority proposed the development of Tien Lang as the second international airport in the Capital Region. The proposed airport site is located near Vinh Quang Beach in Tien Lang District, approximately 120 km from Hanoi’s city center and just 40 km from Hai Phong’s city center.

Following this proposal, in 2022, the Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of Transport to research and develop a construction plan for the Tien Lang International Airport, in alignment with the master plan for the development of the country’s airport system. Notably, in the recent past, the city of Hai Phong has been working on a proposal for the Southern Coastal Economic Zone (SEZ). According to this proposal, the SEZ will span approximately 200 km2 and will include the Tien Lang Airport. Image source: Hai Phong Economic Zone Authority (HEZA)

Even though the Tien Lang International Airport has not yet been constructed, the surrounding infrastructure is already taking shape. The most prominent feature is the Van Uc River Bridge, located just 5 km from the proposed airport site.

The Van Uc River Bridge is a major bridge that is part of the coastal road project. With a total investment of 800 billion VND, the bridge spans 2.24 km, connecting Kien Thuy and Tien Lang districts in Hai Phong city.

The Van Uc River Bridge is constructed using balanced cantilever construction with pre-stressed concrete and super T-beam approach spans.

The bridge has a clearance height of 32.6 meters. As a result, despite being just 4 km from the sea, the Van Uc River Bridge still allows for easy passage of ships and boats.

As of April 2023, the bridge’s components, such as lighting, railings, and road surface, were substantially complete. However, the bridge has not yet been officially opened to traffic due to the incomplete connecting coastal road.

In the future, if the Tien Lang International Airport is built, the Van Uc River Bridge will play a significant role in facilitating transportation between Hai Phong’s city center and the airport, and vice versa.
