According to the Joint Stock Railway Transport Company, after nearly 2 months of the railway sector selling Tet tickets for the Lunar New Year of 2025, nearly 125,000 tickets have been sold so far.

Sharing with the press, Ms. Tran Thi Hang (30 years old, from Phu Yen) said that her family had planned to leave Ho Chi Minh City on the 26th of the last month of the lunar calendar to return to their hometown. However, this year, the railway sector sold tickets earlier than usual, about 1 month earlier, and the train from Ho Chi Minh City to Tuy Hoa on the 26th of the last month was sold out very early. As a result, her family had to choose to buy bus tickets to return to their hometown for Tet.

According to a representative of the Joint Stock Railway Transport Company, as in previous years, the demand for travel during the Tet peak season to the central provinces, cities, and tourist destinations is always high. To meet the travel needs of passengers, from the 29th of the last month to the 3rd of the first month, the company also organizes trains to serve people going on spring outings such as Hanoi – Vinh, Hanoi – Dong Hoi, Saigon – Nha Trang…

Regarding the service plan during Tet, Mr. Do Ngoc Hai, Head of the Road Transport Management Department (Ho Chi Chi Minh City Department of Transport), said that up to now, the inter-provincial bus stations in the city have prepared a plan for additional buses and are ready to relieve congestion if the number of passengers increases suddenly. “The city’s authorities will coordinate with localities to update traffic information to avoid congestion. In addition, the Ho Chi Minh City Public Transport Management Center will also increase buses to entertainment areas and inter-provincial bus stations to help relieve congestion when there is a sudden surge in passengers,” said Mr. Hai.

An airline ticket agent in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, said that there are no cheap tickets during Tet. Tickets on low-demand days are not scarce, but they are also difficult to buy and even scarce during the Tet peak days and at peak hours, especially on long-distance routes from the South to the North before Tet and from the North to the South after Tet.

No shortage of buses

Talking to Tien Phong Newspaper, Mr. Bui Hoa An, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, affirmed: “There will be no shortage of buses to serve the travel needs of people during this Tet holiday.”

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, the number of passengers traveling during Tet 2025 is expected to increase by about 20% compared to last year. From the 20th of the last month to the 10th of the first month, the average number of passengers served through inter-provincial bus stations is about 94,000 with more than 6,500 trips (an increase of about 6 – 10% compared to the same period) and an increase of 50% compared to normal days.

Mr. An said that the expressways connecting provinces with Ho Chi Minh City have been put into use, shortening the transportation time. Along with that, train, bus, and air tickets for Tet have been sold early through electronic channels, so transport units have proactively planned to rent additional buses to serve people if needed. The current capacity to serve at inter-provincial fixed-route transport stations in the city has more than 4,800 buses, equivalent to nearly 164,000 seats; contract cars are nearly 18,000 vehicles corresponding to 246,000 seats, which are additional sources for transport units by route when needed. The current capacity of the stations is more than 19,000 vehicles per day.

According to the Department of Transport, major stations such as Mien Dong Bus Station, Mien Tay Bus Station, Mien Dong (new) Bus Station, An Suong Bus Station, and Nga Tu Ga Bus Station have announced the sale of bus tickets on their websites. Therefore, people can proactively buy tickets, ensuring convenience. The management board of the export processing zones – industrial parks in Ho Chi Minh City said that this year, some units will let workers and employees go on Tet holiday earlier. Therefore, in the peak period before the Tet holiday, a part of the workers has returned to their hometown, which is also a factor in reducing the pressure on passenger transport during this Tet holiday.
