“Frenzy” for Tet Train Tickets

According to the Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR), after 2 months of Tet ticket sales, the railway sector has sold over 137,000 tickets so far.

VNR stated that the ticket sales speed this year is quite fast, and the current ticket sales volume and revenue are 123% and 124% higher, respectively, compared to the same period last year. Many trains traveling from South to North from January 22 to 26, 2025 (December 23 to 27 on the lunar calendar) are already sold out.

As of now, the number of remaining tickets for the pre-Tet period (from January 21 and earlier, and January 27-28, 2025, which is December 22 and earlier, and December 28-29 on the lunar calendar) are still available for all stations; while for the period from January 22 to 26, 2025 (December 23 to 27 on the lunar calendar), there are still many tickets available to Phan Thiet and Nha Trang stations.

For the post-Tet period (from January 29 to February 16, 2025, which is the 1st to the 19th of the lunar new year), there are still many tickets available for all dates and stations.

To meet the demand of people returning home to celebrate Tet, the railway sector will operate 11 additional trips from Saigon to Quang Ngai and Hanoi and vice versa, providing 5,000 more seats.

Specifically, from Saigon Station (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) to Hanoi Station (Dong Da District, Hanoi), there will be additional trains SE12 on January 17-18; TN6 on January 18-19; and SE24 on January 17, 2025.

From Hanoi Station to Saigon Station, there will be additional trains SE11 on January 18-19; TN5 on January 20-21; and SE23 on February 15, 2025. There will also be an additional train SE26 from Saigon to Quang Ngai on January 19, 2025.

These additional tickets will be sold through all railway sales channels, such as the website, e-wallet applications, and mobile apps for ticket purchases, or passengers can contact the stations, ticket agents, or the railway call centers.

Apart from these 11 additional trains, the railway sector will also sell tickets for train sections. Accordingly, the Hanoi – Vinh route will sell tickets for trains NA1/NA2 from January 1, 2025, to February 16, 2025. The Hanoi – Lao Cai route will regularly operate the pair of trains SP3/SP4 and SP7/SP8 from January 1, 2025, to February 28, 2025.

Reasons for the Increase in Ticket Prices

VNR representatives informed that this year, the railway sector would provide approximately 167,000 seats to serve passengers during the Tet holiday, which falls on the Year of the Snake, 2025. Ticket sales also started earlier than usual, beginning on October 1.

VNR shared that, unlike last year, this year’s Tet trains would not arrange auxiliary seats for sale. Additionally, many seating carriages have been converted into berth compartments, resulting in a reduced number of seats.

The change in seating arrangements compared to previous years is one of the reasons for the average ticket price increase of 4-5%. However, VNR affirmed that if there is a high demand from passengers, the railway sector will add more carriages and trains during peak days.

According to a survey by Tien Phong newspaper, for the upcoming Tet holiday, the highest ticket price for the longest route, Saigon – Hanoi, is over VND 3.2 million, and the lowest is above VND 2.2 million during the peak days. Notably, there is a train with a VIP compartment offering only two berths for passengers who desire more privacy, with each berth priced at VND 6.4 million.

This year, the railway sector has also discontinued the “buy now, pay later” option, and customers now have 30 minutes to complete the payment after booking to avoid situations where passengers reserve seats but delay payment.

Passengers departing from Saigon Station on January 27, 2025 (lunar December 28), and traveling 1,000 km or more, will enjoy a 3% discount on ticket prices. A 5% discount is offered for round-trip tickets, and students can avail of a 20% discount depending on the train type during the pre- and post-Tet periods.
