With Lunar New Year just over a month away, local authorities have started reporting on Tet bonuses, with initial figures suggesting no significant changes from previous years.

BONUSES RANGE FROM HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS TO HALF A MILLION DONG

In Ha Giang, according to the Department of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs, the highest bonus for the upcoming solar new year is 3 million VND per person, while the lowest is 250,000 VND. For the Lunar New Year, the survey shows that the highest bonus is 109.6 million VND per person, and the lowest is 300,000 VND.

In 2024, the average monthly income of workers in the province reached 8.78 million VND. The highest salary was recorded at 31.6 million VND, while the lowest was 3.45 million VND. So far, no unit has been reported to owe wages to their employees.

In Thai Nguyen, after aggregating reports from over 300 enterprises with nearly 146,000 employees, the local labor department informed that the highest bonus for the 2025 solar new year is expected to be 85 million VND, with an average of 900,000 VND, and a minimum of 100,000 VND. For the Lunar New Year, businesses plan to offer a maximum bonus of 175 million VND, an average of 7.5 million VND, and a minimum of 100,000 VND.

In the southern region, the “industrial hub” of Binh Duong has also announced the 2025 Lunar New Year bonuses of enterprises in the province. According to the Department of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs, out of more than 1,700 reporting enterprises, over 1,670 have planned for Tet bonuses.

Consequently, the highest bonus for the Lunar New Year is 375 million VND, offered by a foreign-invested enterprise (FDI). The average bonus for this occasion is about 8.77 million VND, and the lowest is 4.96 million VND, equivalent to the regional minimum wage. Regarding the solar new year, the highest bonus is 368 million VND, also belonging to an FDI company.

In Can Tho city, the Department of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs shared that over 800 enterprises have reported on the situation of salaries, bonuses, and labor relations in the locality, with over 49,000 employees. The highest projected bonus for the 2025 solar new year is 151.4 million VND, offered by an FDI company. The average bonus is expected to reach 3.16 million VND, while the lowest is 200,000 VND (also from an FDI enterprise).

For the Lunar New Year, the highest bonus is projected to be 300 million VND, and the lowest is 200,000 VND, both belonging to private enterprises.

Long An province currently leads in Tet bonuses. According to the local labor department, the highest bonus for the Lunar New Year of 2025 in the province is 519 million VND, offered by an FDI company.

The average bonus reaches 8.5 million VND, but the lowest is only 1 million VND for workers who have been employed for less than 12 months. For the 2025 solar new year, the average bonus is 2.2 million VND, with a maximum of 30 million VND and a minimum of 200,000 VND for those employed for less than six months.

In 2024, Long An also led in the highest Tet bonus, with 5.68 billion VND offered to a senior manager in an FDI enterprise. Additionally, 2024 witnessed a breakthrough in the highest bonus for the Lunar New Year, the highest ever recorded up to that time.

ENTERPRISES STRIVE TO PROVIDE TET BONUSES FOR THEIR EMPLOYEES

To grasp the situation of wages, arrears, and Tet bonus plans for 2025, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs requested local authorities to conduct a review and submit reports by mid-December.

Along with the reports on salary and bonus levels, the Ministry also asked localities to focus on ensuring a balance between labor supply and demand and maintaining stable labor relations before, during, and after Tet. This is to prevent labor disputes, work stoppages, or strikes related to wage and bonus issues in enterprises, which could affect production, business activities, and social order in the area.

Therefore, many businesses have started disclosing their 2025 Tet bonus plans based on their yearly performance, providing this information to their employees to assure them and foster long-term commitment. Some companies have shared that the standard Tet bonus for their workers is one month’s salary, and they also provide Tet gifts.

Nguyen Trang Huy, Chairman of the Trade Union of Vietnam-Pacific Garment Joint Stock Company, shared that the company has planned to give each employee a Tet bonus of one month’s salary, an increase of about 200,000 VND from the previous year, due to the implementation of the regional minimum wage adjustment.

In addition to the Tet bonus, the company will give each employee a gift bag. For those who live far from their hometowns, the Hanoi Textile and Garment Union will provide cars to take them home for Tet.

Furthermore, to improve employees’ income and living standards, the company increased their lunch allowance from 20,000 VND to 25,000 VND in 2024. They also enhanced seniority allowances, with workers employed for over one year now receiving 100,000 VND per month, compared to the previous requirement of two years of service. For those with two to three years of service, the seniority allowance is 200,000 VND per month.

A representative of the Department of Labor Relations and Wage (Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs) also predicted that Tet bonuses in 2025 would see a slight increase from the previous year. As wages are expected to rise by about 7-8%, Tet bonuses should follow a similar trend. However, it is not mandatory for companies to provide a 13th-month salary or higher; such arrangements are made through private agreements.

According to Hoang Quang Phong, Vice President of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), initial observations indicate that enterprises plan to offer Tet bonuses to their employees.

Businesses in labor-intensive industries like textiles, footwear, and electronics assembly are expected to provide higher Tet bonuses than last year. The bonus amounts will depend on each company’s business performance but are anticipated to be at least on par with 2024 levels.

According to the 2019 Labor Code, bonuses are sums of money, assets, or other forms of remuneration that employers give to employees based on their production and business results and the level of task completion.

Based on annual reports released by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs, most units and enterprises provide Tet bonuses to their employees, except in extremely difficult cases.
