In late last month, The Information’s Wayne Ma revealed that the iPhone 17 Pro’s rear panel will feature a “rectangular camera bump, made of aluminum instead of the traditional 3D glass.” The bottom portion of the back will still be made of glass to support wireless charging. Additionally, the new ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air will sport a single large camera in the center.
This morning, the Weibo account Digital Chat Station, which often shares insights on the camera technology of new iPhones, claimed that supply chain documents they obtained confirmed the rectangular camera design.
The leaker opined that while the “specific details of the camera arrangement are not yet clear, this module is in an elongated oval shape.” They also predicted that many new Android models in the coming year will adopt a similar design.
If accurate, this design would be the most significant change since Apple introduced the square camera bump with the iPhone 11 in 2019. Prior to that, iPhones typically featured a traditional vertical camera arrangement. The switch to a square design was to accommodate the addition of an ultra-wide camera, along with larger sensors and lenses. This design has since become an iPhone trademark.
Weibo leaker Ice Universe questioned whether Apple would truly dare to make such a bold move, suggesting that it would require a “major interior design overhaul, akin to remodeling the entire structure of an old house.”
For now, this information remains a leak, and Apple’s plans may change before the official launch. The iPhone 17 lineup, including the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Air, is expected to debut in the fall of 2025, promising exciting improvements and features for users.
