On the evening of the 21st of December, Co.opmart Ly Thuong Kiet (in District 10), MM Mega Market Binh Phu (in District 6), GO! An Lac, and other supermarkets were bustling with shoppers, a notable increase from the usual weekday evenings. The majority of customers’ baskets were filled with fresh produce, cleaning supplies, soft drinks, beer, and Tet gift baskets.
Nguyen Thi Bich Van, Director of Communications at Central Retail Vietnam (which owns the GO!, Big C, and Tops Market supermarket chains), shared that they have witnessed a gradual increase in sales leading up to Tet. The company had prepared for the Tet holiday season well in advance, offering a range of promotions and discounts, as well as a “price lock” policy on over 10,000 fast-moving consumer goods, ensuring no price increases for six weeks before Tet.
Central Retail Vietnam has stocked up on fresh produce for the upcoming Tet holiday, with a planned increase of approximately 10% compared to last year. “Notably, Central Retail will collaborate with suppliers nationwide to ensure continuous deliveries during Tet, guaranteeing a sufficient supply of fresh produce and other goods both before and after the holiday,” said Ms. Bich Van.

The Co.opmart and Co.opXtra supermarket chains have also stocked up on 12,000 tons of goods, representing a 30-50% increase compared to a typical month. A significant portion of their budget has been allocated to stabilizing the market prices of essential goods such as rice, sugar, cooking oil, pork, poultry, eggs, processed foods, vegetables, and seafood. The remaining budget is dedicated to other food and non-food items, as well as Tet specialties.
WinMart/WinMart+/WiN have increased their stock of rice, cooking oil, vegetables, meat, and popular festive items like cookies and soft drinks by approximately 20%.
Regarding Tet supplies, Mr. Ngo Hong Y, Head of the Trade Management Department at the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, assured that there is an abundant supply of goods at competitive prices. This is due to the early preparations made by businesses and retailers, especially those participating in the market stabilization program.
The total output of essential goods prepared by these enterprises accounts for 25-43% of the market share. On average, they plan to supply 8,300 tons of rice, 5,000 tons of beef, 5,500 tons of poultry meat, 23 million poultry eggs, 1,400 tons of sugar, 1,100 tons of cooking oil, 800 tons of processed food, 10,000 tons of vegetables, and 200 tons of seafood each month during the Tet period…

“The enterprises have prepared a total of VND 22,000 billion worth of Tet goods, with over VND 8,000 billion allocated to stabilizing the market prices of essential goods like rice, food, and other necessities,” said Mr. Ngo Hong Y.
The businesses are prepared to increase production if necessary and will organize mobile sales to address any abnormal fluctuations or local shortages.
According to the Department of Industry and Trade, supermarkets and stores have planned to remain open throughout the Tet holiday, except for closing on the first day of the new year. Additionally, convenience stores like Family Mart, GS25, and Kingfood Mart will be open during the entire holiday period.
