In 2024, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports achieved remarkable success in terms of market reach, volume, and export value. This growth can be attributed to the strong performance of various produce, including durian, mango, and especially coconuts. Vietnamese coconuts are highly favored in many countries, particularly in China.
According to data from the Chinese Customs, in the first 11 months of 2024, China’s coconut imports reached 1.25 million tons, valued at $649.55 million, representing a decrease of 44.6% in volume and 43.7% in value compared to the same period in 2023.
China sources coconuts from seven countries and territories worldwide. Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam are the primary suppliers, accounting for 98.71% of China’s total coconut imports.
Vietnam is the third-largest coconut supplier to China, with exports exceeding 253,000 tons, valued at $74.7 million. This represents a decrease of 40.3% in volume and 30.3% in value compared to the previous year. The average export price of coconuts was $16.8 per ton.
Vietnam’s market share of coconuts in China’s total imports increased slightly from 18.75% in the first 11 months of 2023 to 20.2% in the same period in 2024.

Preliminary statistics from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs indicate that coconuts accounted for 5.29% of the country’s total fruit and vegetable export turnover in the first 11 months of 2024, an increase from 4.16% in 2023.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the decrease in China’s coconut imports from Vietnam is only temporary. China agreed to grant official export licenses for fresh Vietnamese coconuts starting August 19, 2024, creating a significant opportunity for Vietnam’s coconut industry to tap into the vast Chinese market.
Vietnam has approximately 200,000 hectares of coconut plantations, ranking 7th out of 93 coconut-producing countries worldwide, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. About one-third of Vietnam’s coconut-growing areas meet the organic standards of the US and Europe, mainly in the Central Coastal and Mekong Delta regions (Tra Vinh, Ben Tre). This provides a significant advantage for coconut exports.
The Vietnam Coconut Association forecasts that the export turnover of this commodity and its processed products could reach $1.2 billion this year if the export process goes smoothly.
Specifically, exports of fresh coconuts to China are expected to reach $250 million this year, accounting for 25% of the total export value of the industry. Last year, fresh coconut exports to China reached 606,000 tons, a 120% increase compared to 2018, according to data from the China Fruit Marketing Association.
Experts attribute the competitiveness of Vietnamese coconuts against Thai coconuts to the sweet and refreshing taste of the Xiêm coconut variety, which is favored in many markets such as the EU, the US, Canada, and South Korea.
In addition to fresh coconuts, China also has a strong demand for processed coconut products such as coconut milk, coconut cream, dried coconut, and coconut jelly, which is a popular topping for beverages. The consumption trend for coconut jelly, oil, and water is on the rise due to their perceived health benefits. According to nutrition experts, coconut jelly is rich in fiber, aids digestion, and supports cardiovascular health.
