According to a representative from the Hanoi Department of Planning and Architecture (QHKT), speaking to Tien Phong Newspaper, since 2013, the Department has been working with the Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee to organize a competition for the renovation of the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square. The “Hammerhead” building was also considered at that time to potentially support the expansion of the square’s space.

This identified the need for an investment project to Renovate, Reorganize, and Reconstruct the Dong Kinh – Nghia Thuc Square area, recognizing its high historical and cultural value. The project connects two important areas: the Hoan Kiem Lake Special National Relic Site (to the north) and the National Relic Site of the Old Quarter (to the south). The project is being implemented concurrently with the research and investment in constructing other public spaces around Hoan Kiem Lake, as directed by the Central Committee, the Hanoi Party Committee, and the Hanoi People’s Committee.

The “Hammerhead” building

The QHKT Department is currently working with relevant units to finalize the urban design product based on the conceptual plan and solutions for organizing the architectural landscape space of the Dong Kinh – Nghia Thuc Square area. The urban design scope includes a linear square, the Dinh Tien Hoang double road, the surfaces of the blocks and streets (Dinh Tien Hoang, Cau Go, Ho Hoan Kiem, etc.), the surfaces of the Long Van – Hong Van building, the Ho Guom Cultural Information Center, and the Thuy Ta building.

Regarding the “Hammerhead” building, with an area of nearly 500 square meters, its demolition will provide space for a transportation square, ensuring connectivity between the Old Quarter, Ho Guom, and adjacent streets such as Dinh Liet and Cau Go. This will form a cohesive transportation space and serve as a transportation square for the people. “After the demolition and combining with the surrounding space, Hanoi will have a 12,000 square meter square, a rare space serving the people and the city’s major events and national ceremonies,” shared the representative from the QHKT Department.
