On April 10th, the Hanoi People’s Court held a first-instance trial and sentenced Duong Thi Thu Phong (born 1945, residing in Nghia Tan ward, Cau Giay district) to 12 years in prison for “fraudulent appropriation of property.”
According to the case file, in 2010, Mr. and Mrs. H. (born 1974, from Thach That district) mortgaged their land use rights and assets attached to the land, measuring 100.8 square meters, to a bank to borrow VND 1 billion. However, they later defaulted on the loan.

In late February 2022, the People’s Court of Thach That district issued a decision recognizing the agreement between the involved parties. In mid-November of the same year, the District’s Civil Judgment Enforcement Bureau issued Decision No. 182 on the enforcement of Mr. and Mrs. H.’s land use rights and attached assets.
Through a referral, Mrs. H. sought help from Duong Thi Thu Phong, who promised to retrieve the house and land within a week in exchange for VND 1.2 billion.
Believing her words, on September 29, 2023, Mr. and Mrs. H. transferred more than VND 1.1 billion to Phong’s account, only to have the money appropriated.
According to the prosecution, out of the fraudulent amount, the accused spent VND 410 million on weight loss services at a beauty institute, VND 20 million on a phone, and the rest on personal expenses and loans.
