On May 9, the Ministry of Construction, in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Kien Giang province, announced the master plan for Phu Quoc International Airport for the period 2021-2030, with a vision towards 2050. The planning was approved under Decision No. 427/QD-BXD, with a total area of approximately 1,050 hectares and a total investment of over VND 26,500 billion by 2030, and an additional VND 25,800 billion for the period after 2030.

According to Mr. Uong Viet Dung, Director of the Vietnam Aviation Administration, the airport planning is an important step towards modernizing infrastructure, anticipating trade and tourism demands, and hosting major events, including APEC 2027.
As presented by ADCC, a consulting company for aviation construction projects, ahead of APEC 2027, Phu Quoc Airport will be expanded to accommodate 18 million passengers per year, a 4.5-fold increase from its current capacity of 4 million passengers. The goal by 2050 is to upgrade the airport to handle 50 million passengers annually.
The expansion plan includes the construction of an additional 3,300-meter-long runway alongside the existing 3,500-meter runway, expanding the apron to 70-80 parking positions to accommodate wide-body aircraft such as B747, B787, and A350, as well as long-haul flights from Europe and the US.
A highlight of the project is the new passenger terminal, inspired by the image of a phoenix, designed by Singaporean consulting firm CPG. The terminal will be equipped with modern technologies such as biometric identification, remote check-in, and automated baggage sorting, reducing check-in time to just 15-30 seconds per person.

Additionally, a VVIP terminal will be constructed to receive state leaders, designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti, the mastermind behind the Kissing Bridge, and inspired by the sea eagle.
The project also includes the expansion of the cargo terminal, radar systems, and other auxiliary works.
Prior to this, Phu Quoc City had announced a series of projects to serve APEC 2027, including a 10,000 sq. m complex of Conference and Exhibition Center, International Press Center, Cultural and Performing Arts Center, duty-free commercial center, and roads connecting the airport to the city center.
